Page 16: Cerulean City (revisited!) - Vermillion City

After you beat Misty in Cerulean Gym, the cop standing by the door in the upper right part of the city has moved. You can now go in the house.

Go into the house, talk to the people, and come out the back. Fight the Rocket member standing there and get TM 28, Dig. Teach it to your Sandshrew (don't have a Sandshrew because you have the Red version? Trade for one! Sandshrew is a really useful Pokémon, especially when he has Dig.) Whatever you do, don't teach it to Diglett because he learns it on his own (just like the guy in the house hints at!). After you've done that, walk south until you hit the daycare. You can have this guy raise a Pokémon of yours if you want, but be warned: he charges. It's 200 Pokébucks for the first level, and 100 for each additional level. Also, you have no control over which attacks your Pokémon will learn as it levels up, so it's best to not use the daycare until one of your Pokémon has learned all it's attacks.

After you're done with all that, go into the underground tunnel. On a side note, if you have the Red version of the game, you can trade with the girl by the tunnel entrance to get a female Nidoran. Also, once you get Itemfinder, be sure to come back because there are some hidden items in the tunnel.

When you exit the tunnel you will be near Vermillion City. Walk around in the nearby field, you can catch Meowths and Mankeys, depending on which version you have. I personally prefer Meowths to Mankeys, but I prefer Primeapes over Persians. It's your call.

There are a bunch of trainers waiting to challenge you, but only about 3 are unavoidable. The guy in the lower right part of the field has a powerful Butterfree. Bring a Spearow and use Peck on it. Oh yeah, and did you catch an extra Spearow like I told you to? You'll need it soon.

After you make it past those trainers, you're in Vermillion City. This place is a lot bigger than most of the cities you've been in so far, and the Pokémart has a great selection. If you're short on cash, sell the Nugget you won from Nugget Bridge.

When you've looked around to your heart's content, go into the Pokémon Fan Club building. Talk to the president, and after he babbles for a while about his Rapidash, he'll give you a Bike Voucher. Take it back to Cerulean City and get a free bike!

Come back to Vermillion City. Go into the house next to the Fan Club, talk to the Fishing Guru and get the Old Rod. You can now fish for a Magikarp. (Magikarps are the only thing the Old Rod can catch so don't bother trying to catch anything else!)

If you think your Pokémon are powerful enough, you can go onto the S.S. Anne. Most of the rooms have someone who wants to challenge you, anyone from Youngsters and Lasses to Sailors. Also, most rooms have an item or two for you to pick up, some even have TMs. Also make sure you go into the kitchen and grab the Great Ball in the trash.

On a side note, you don't have to worry about the S.S. Anne leaving port. It won't leave until you get the Cut HM from the captain, so you can exit ans re-enter the ship as many times as you want. So, right now, go off the ship and heal all your Pokémon. Then come back on and go all the way to the Captain's quarters. When you're almost there, Gary will show up and challenge you. It's kinda funny, instead of the usual "Yo, Ash!" he says "Bonjour, Ash!" ...he's got such a big ego. Anyway, beat him, and continue on into the Captain's cabin. Figure out this "puzzle" (it's in quotes because it's just so easy!! :) and the Captain will give you HM 01, Cut. Teach it to a Pokémon like Farfetch'd (Dux).

Now you can leave the ship. As soon as you step off it, the ship sails away, never to return. Well, that's ok. Go back to the Vermillion City Pokécenter, take out the extra Spearow you caught and if you haven't already done so, trade it away for a Farfetch'd.

Ready to take on Lt. Surge? You'd better hope so. He uses electric Pokémon, so bring Diglett or Bulbasaur. Whatever you do, DON'T use a flying or water Pokémon!

Now you're ready to go get a Drowzee to the east of Vermillion. Ride over there on your new bike and capture a Drowzee. There are also some other Pokémon in this field, including Ekans (red) and Sandshrew (blue). If you didn't catch these before, for some horrible reason *cough cough* now's your chance to do so.

If you're looking to build your Pokémon's levels, fight with some of the trainers. They're really tough (but not if you've trained yours well!) The trainers in this field are mostly Gamblers and Engineers.

After you've done ALL that, you should be ready to go on to Page 17.
