What is Pokémon?
Pokémon is a RPG for Game Boy made by Nintendo and Game Freak. The game was originally made in Japan, but it was so popular they made an English version of the game. In Japan, there are 7 versions available: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Platinum.
The Red, Blue, and Green versions were just your average run-of-the-mill Pokémon games. The Gold, and Silver versions(Just released in Japan!!) have over 100 new Pokémon, a new mode of transportation (skateboard) and much more detail!! The Yellow version, or Pikachu version, has you start out with Pikachu instead of Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Pikachu doesn't like being inside the Pokéball so he follows you around.
When Nintendo and some other really big companies decided to release Pokémon in the US, they only released two versions, Red and Blue. Each version of Pokémon has 139 different Pokémon on it. You need to trade with someone who has a different version to get all 150. Typically, the Red version's Pokémon are more powerful, and the Blue's are more rare, since it was a limited-edition cartridge.
To me, Pokémon is a really addictive game with great music, and high complexity for that little 1 ounce cartridge. Plus, it looks really great on Super Game Boy.
Story
You are an 11-year old boy living in Pallet Town with your mother. Your rival lives next door to you. You and your rival used to play nicely together when you were little, but lately, he has become mean. He sees you as his rival because you are the same age and height.
When you hear that Professor Oak is a Pokémon expert, you get excited because you are a curious boy. You walk outside of Pallet Town in search of Pokémon and you hear a voice.
"Hey! Don't go into the grass!" It's Professor Oak. "There are wild Pokémon living in there," he says. "They can be very dangerous. If you possess trained Pokémon, you can let them fight against wild ones."
Professor Oak takes you back to his lab where your rival is waiting. Professor Oak invitied him because he is Professor Oak's grandson. Professor Oak instructs you: "There are 3 Pokémon here, so choose the one you like. Now that you have a Pokémon, the rest is up to you..."
Pokémon Each Pokémon in the game has one or more types. The type, or class, of a Pokémon determines its strengths and weaknesses. There are 15 elemental types, and a Pokémon can be single-typed or double-typed, in which case it could be any two types. Let's see, that's more than 110 different combinations of types!
The 15 types are:
Normal
Fire
Water
Electric
Grass
Ice
Fighting
Poison
Ground
Flying
Psychic
Bug
Rock
Ghost
Dragon
Sometimes, a Pokémon can learn attacks that aren't of its type, with a Technical Machine. (More on that later!) For example, a water Pokémon may learn an attack called Blizzard, an ice-based attack. And any Pokémon can learn normal attacks, and a normal Pokémon can almost always learn any kind of special attack.
This can put your Pokémon at an advantage or disadvantage, depending on how you use this.
