Simply Love
by JoY
Part 1
The morning was still more dark than light when Hanamichi awoke, the predawn chill having woken him from his restful slumber. He did not feel much like moving though, preferring to prop himself up on one elbow and watch his beautiful lover.
Lover. They had come a long way. And 'lover' did not seem to be a strong enough word for them. Indeed, he did not think that there was a word to truly describe what Rukawa meant to him.
"My heart" Hanamichi had taken to calling him that.
When Rukawa had first heard it, the customary "Doaho" had been followed by a beautiful blush, one of the many endearing traits that Rukawa had. As such, Hanamichi had almost made it his life goal to make Rukawa blush more often. He just looked so cute when he did that.
"Cause you are the centre of my being. My life. Without you there will be nothing. I have forgotten how to live without you with me"
That had been his answer when Rukawa asked him why he called him that.
He had been surprised when, at the end of his passionate speech, those eyes that he loved so much were tearing, liquid crystals swimming in their depths and overflowing, gliding down the pale ivory cheeks. Hanamichi had lifted his callused palms to hold that beloved face and gently brush away the tears with his thumbs.
He had always believed that, beneath that cold facade that Rukawa showed the world was a fragile, vulnerable soul and as they had got to know each other, as teammates, partners and then friends he had been proven right. Not being near others, keeping everyone at a distance had been a tactic to safeguard a heart that had lost too much and fearing it had hidden from love.
They had come a long way. And it had been a journey taken together, which made every step a cherished memory. Team mates uneasy allies in the court, then friends and partners.
And now so much more.
It hadn't always been easy, but it had been worth it, no doubt about that, to coax that elusive heart out of hiding, to break down the walls.
Actually, they hadn't been all that different. While Rukawa had kept everyone away with a cold exterior, Hanamichi had kept them away from his heart by acting loud, obnoxious and silly, letting them see only what he wanted them to see. His heart too was behind a wall. A wall erected out of need.
Maybe, they had just extended the perimeters of the wall to protect two hearts together.
Hanamichi looked down at the warm comfortable weight against his chest. He was exceptionally pleased to have this weight on him. Rukawa had , almost from the beginning, taken to sleeping against his chest , as a substitute for his pillow. The kitsune was just like this, affectionate in the little things, speaking more in his actions than a million words. Another trait of Rukawa that he loved .
No matter how they got to sleep in the morning, Rukawa would be snuggled against his chest come morning, with Hanamichi's arms around his slender form. And it had been a wonderful feeling to wake up to every morning. It just made his heart swell with love so strong, so much
When had he fallen in love? When had they fallen in love?
Tried as he might, he could not pinpoint the exact moment he had fallen for Rukawa. He had even tried to ask Rukawa and all he got for the question was a glare and a "baka" the standard answer to all questions that Rukawa considers silly or did not know the answer. Thus the conclusion that Hanamichi had came to is that Rukawa did not know either as he did not think that the question was silly.
Love had sneaked up to them silently, sneaked into two unknowing heart without notice. And by the time they found out , they were already deeply in love.
