Sakuragi Hanamichi stared deep
into space, blocking out everything else around him. He was
thinking hard about something, he couldn’t quite put his
finger on it...but it was something important. Something...from
the past. Something about Rukawa Kaede.
Sakuragi’s eyebrows furrowed
together as he stared into his hands, trying to concentrate. What
had made him try to remember anything about that fox, anyway? He
tried recall what had happened after practice that evening....
~Flashback~
" Hey fox!" Sakuragi called out to Rukawa.
Rukawa ignored him completely,
throwing ball after ball into the hoop.
" Are you deft or what?!"
Sakuragi taunted, still not giving up.
Rukawa sighed and turned to face
him, the same expressionless look on his face.
" One on one?" Sakuragi
challenged, his eye holding a strange gleam in it.
Rukawa sighed again but accepted
anyway. He walked to the center of the court and gestured
Sakuragi to attack first. Sakuragi smirked and got into his
position.
Half an hour later....
" That’s...(pant) not
fair...you...(pant)..cheated!!" Sakuragi accused, collapsing
onto the floor. Rukawa tried to catch his breath as he knelt down
beside Sakuragi.
The score was 13-15, Rukawa won, obviously.
Rukawa sat up straight, stretching his legs out. Sakuragi was
still lying down on the floor, eyes closed, panting heavily.
Rukawa stared at the ceiling, waiting for Sakuragi to catch his
breath and then explain what he had meant by him
‘cheating’.After several minutes had passed by,
Sakuragi was breathing easier but he still hadn’t said a
word.
Rukawa finally turned to take a look at Sakuragi...and found the other boy fast asleep. He almost grinned to himself then. Rukawa lowered his head down near Sakuragi’s face. He took a look at Sakuragi before closing his eyes. Rukawa gathered his breath and.....
" ARE YOU DEAD YET??!!" He
yelled into Sakuragi’s ear.
Sakuragi woke up with a start. He
looked around at his surroundings, trying to find the person who
had dared wake him in such a rude manner. He found Rukawa sitting
beside him, a most peculiar expression on his usually stone-cold
face. Sakuragi looked at him, his eyes narrowing at Rukawa.
" Fox, did you...??!!!"
Sakuragi asked, his ager boiling.
Rukawa’s lip twitched slightly,
his eyes sparkling.
" You did, didn’t
you??!!" Sakuragi exclaimed, getting up from his place.
Rukawa bent his head down.
" You...you...YOU
KITSUNE!!!" Sakuragi exclaimed again.
Rukawa turned to Sakuragi, still
sitting. " Calm down..for a dead guy, you sure are
noisy." Rukawa said coolly, his eyes still sparkling.
Sakuragi looked like he was about to
shout something, but decided against it, and sat back down beside
Rukawa. He stayed quiet for awhile, watching Rukawa in a strange
way. Rukawa stared back at him, his face now, expressionless
again.
Sakuragi suddenly grinned. "
Didn’t know you could shout so loud, fox." Sakuragi
said, punching Rukawa lightly on the shoulder.
Rukawa looked slightly shocked for a
second there, then regained himself. He turned to Sakuragi, then
did something Sakuragi hadn’t expected. He returned the
punch softly, then grinned playfully, saying," There’s
lot’s of things about me you don’t
know...Hanamichi-kun."
~End of Flashback~
Sakuragi remembered that they had gotten into another one of
their fights again and then he had forgotten about the incident
until he reached home. He remembered how Rukawa had called him by
his first name, the grin on Rukawa’s face, the way his eyes
lit up....it was all so familiar, like he had seen the fox smile
before. That was impossible though....the fox had never smiled
before....but then why did he feel as if though he’d seen
him smile a million times?!
Frustrated, Sakuragi grabbed the
remote control beside him, and switched on the television. His
fingers pressed the buttons on the control, switching from
channel to channel, his eyes focused on the screen, as if though
expecting a certain show to appear, although he knew that nothing
interesting was on.
Suddenly, his fingers automatically
stopped pushing the buttons, and a show appeared on the screen.
Sesame Street?!
