Your Angel

Prologue

The sounds of people screaming with glee could be heard as the four friends entered the night carnival. Their eyes sparkled at the sight of endless games and rides. It was a carnival and funpark rolled into one. Arcade games, rollercoasters, bumper cars, cotton candy, you name it, it was there.

Akira Sendoh pulled on Fujima Kenji’s hand like a little child, pointing at one of the rides. "There it is...the Twister..." Sendoh said, admiring the sight of the ride.

"So this is what they say the most greatest ride ever?" Fujima eyed the ride wearily.

The Twister, is one of those rides that spin you to the top and swings you around. Sakuragi Hanamichi grinned at it. "I guess they were right...just look at it...." Sakuragi said, his eyes practically glued to the Twister.

"Yeah...just looking at me makes my stomach churn." Mitsui replied, shaking his head, " I dunno...it looks dangerous..."

"Of course it does...all rides look like that..." Sendoh said, laughing, " Don’t worry, it’s totally safe."

"I’m not so sure about this...," Fujima said, shuddering as he heard the screams tthat came from that ride.

"I say we try that out first." Sakuragi said, ignoring Fujima.

"Definately. If we try this out later, when we’re all stuffed up with food...ermm.." Sendoh scratched the back of his head, grinning evilly, "I don’t think it’ll be a pretty sight."

"Fine, fine...but I’ll only go on it once." Mitsui said, throwing his hands up in defeat.

"Same here." Fujima said.

"All right then, let’s go!" Sendoh took off for the line.

The other three followed him. After showing their tickets to the guard, they were all seated in one row, Sendoh and Sakuragi on the side, Mitsui and Fujima in the middle.

"Why am I doing this...??" Fujima moaned as the safety bars were put around him.

"Too late to back out now." Mitsui said, buckling the seatbelts.

The ride started almost immediately. They felt themselves being lifted off the ground. Sakuragi looked down from where he sat. "Whoa...check out the view..." Sakuragi whistled.

"I think I might fall if I look out..." Fujima moaned again.

"Hey, this thing’s stopped." Mitsui remarked.

Indeed the ride had stopped in mid-air, when suddenly, they were pulled to the top and they started spinning wildly in the air.

"THIS......IS....NOT....FUN!!!!" Mitsui shouted at the top of his lungs.

Suddenly, they were thrown to the side and the ride suddenly stopped again.

"What happened..?" Sakuragi asked, nervously looking down.

"I think this is part of the ride..." Sendoh replied.

"Are you sure?" Fujima gasped in surprise.

"What’s wrong?" Mitsui turned to Fujima, questioning him.

"My..my..the..the safety bar....it’s loose..." Fujima answered, his hands clutching the metal tightly.

"You’re not the only one...." Sakuragi said, his voice shaking.

They stared at each other for a moment before Sendoh and Mitsui both checked their bars. "Crap." they said in unison. The ride was starting again. Slowly at first..but then it increased it’s speed.

"HOLD ON TIGHT YOU GUYS!!!" Sendoh yelled out to them.

Sakuragi closed his eyes and felt the world spin around him. He turned to his left to see Fujima, Mitsui, and Sendoh, desperately holding on to the bars. Sakuragi sighed sadly and felt himself being dropped to the ground. He heard the terrified screams around him and let go off the bar, knowing that it was useless. He withdrew his last breath as his body hit the ground.

The world turned black.

Sakuragi opened his eyes and white light blinded him.

"Sakuragi? Are you awake yet?" a familiar voice called out to him.

He felt himself being lifted up. Sakuragi turned to see who it was. A shorter boy, probably about his age, stood before him. Sakuragi realised that he was on a bed. He seated himself properly and took a good look at the boy in front of him. The boy had short black hair, gelled back, and deep brown eyes. He was of average height, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and sneakers.

"You’re probably wondering who I am." The boy said, smiling at him.

"I guess." Sakuragi said unsurely. He didn’t know if he could trust this guy. The other boy grinned."Believe it or not, I’m your guardian angel." He said.

"Wh-what?" Sakuragi asked increduosly.

"Yup, I’m your guardian angel. Mito Youhei, we finally meet." Youhei held out his hand.

Sakuragi stared at Youhei, the look of disbelief on his face. Youhei saw this and withdrew his hand."I know, I know....hard to believe, eh? Can’t blame you...I feel exactly how you feel right now when I met with my guardian angel." Youhei said, taking a chair and sitting in front of Sakuragi.

"Your guardian angel?" Sakuragi asked, leaning against the wall.

"Uh-huh. Everybody has one. My guardian angel’s job is done. Since, I don’t need anyone to ‘look over me’ anymore." Youhei said, crossing his arms, "He had helped me guide you through life, and now, it’s my turn."

"Wait a second....you," Sakuragi said, pointing at Youhei, "Guided me through life?"

"Right! Remember when you first rode your bike without training wheels? I had to use every trick in the book to get you on it." Youhei said.

"Hey, I did that on my own." Sakuragi said defensively, "No ‘little voice’ told me to do it."

"Of course not. But do you remember that little boy who rode around your house shouting out that he could ride without training wheels?" Youhei asked.

"Yeah...I really wanted to kill that guy." Sakuragi said, his eyes narrowing as he remembered.

"Uh...well, the next day, you got on your bike and circled around him, shouting out ‘ See? See? I can ride better then you can!’," Youhei said, laughing.

"How did...?" Sakuragi asked.

"Guess who that little boy was?" Youhei asked, his eyes gleaming.

"You?! No way!" Sakuragi exclaimed.

"Yes way. I was that little boy who annoyed you, the teenaged boy who got you to play basketball, and the elderly man who gave you an advice at the train station when you tried to runaway."

"You...you were all those people?"

"I can be anyone I want to be on earth, Sakuragi." Youhei said.

"If you were my ‘guardian’ why didn’t you keep me from that ride?!!" Sakuragi demanded.

Youhei looked stunned but then recovered himself. "It was just your time, Sakuragi. Yours and your friends." Youhei said softly.

"My friends! Where are they?" Sakuragi asked, sitting up.

"There," Youhei pointed at a door, "On the other side of that door. They’re waiting for their guardian angels to come and give out their tasks."

"Tasks?" Sakuragi repeated.

"Yes, you’re going to become someone’s guardian angel. To guide them through life, as I have to you." Youhei said.

"What..? Why?!" Sakuragi asked again.

"So that you can earn your wings." Youhei answered.

" ‘Wings’? You mean those wings that the angel has..."

"Oh no, ‘wings’ is simply an award that you get, for helping someone through his or hers most difficult times. The time where that person’s choice would affect his life." Youhei explained.

"Oh...what is this award?" Sakuragi asked.

Youhei smiled. "Any wish you make would be granted."

"Wow." Was all that Sakuragi said.

A beep was heard and suddenly, a door appeared on the other side of the room. "It’s time." Youhei said, getting up from where he was.

"Huh? What time..?" Sakuragi looked confused.

Youhei grabbed Sakuragi’s arm and helped him up. "You’re gonna meet your ‘task’." Youhei said.

"What?! No...I’m not ready.." Sakuragi said.

"Ready or not, you have to go now. Come on. You’re going to miss his birth, that would not look good for your records." Youhei said, pulling Sakuragi into a room.

"But..." Sakuragi protested but was cut short as he entered the room. They were standing in an almost empty room that was entirely white. In the middle of the room, a glass ball the size of a globe was floating on air.

"Take a look." Youhei whispered. Sakuragi turned to Youhei then at the glass ball. He walked towards it slowly. The glass ball suddenly was encircled by a bright light.

"What...?" Sakuragi said, stepping back.

Youhei pushed Sakuragi again. "Go look." Youhei said, his voice firm.

Sakuragi regained himself and peered into the glass ball. In it, he saw a baby boy being placed in his mother’s arms. "Who..?" Sakuragi asked Youhei.

"Heh...that would be Rukawa Kaede. Good luck." Youhei said.

With that, Youhei walked out of the room, leaving Sakuragi staring at the glass ball. Youhei closed the door and leaned against it. "His task has begun." Youhei jotted down in a notebook that had suddenly appeared from nowhere.
