Chapter 6: Path of Honor, Path of Love

Ukyou walked slowly along a dark rooftop humming a tune she had heard somewhere. As she walked through quiet night-time Nerima, she idly kicked at small rocks she came across, no doubt blasted up onto the roofs by previous explosive fights between a couple of martial artists. This idea struck her as funny, so for a moment, she smiled. But all too soon the smile drifted off to more cheerful climes than those of Ukyou Kuonji, and she was left with a quietly neutral expression. The amusement value of the rocks now expired, Ukyou went back to humming.

She had been walking around the rooftops of Nerima all day now. After Ranma had fled the dojo, she had pursued him into the house, only to find that he was gone. After changing into her traditional street clothes, tights, chest wrap and light jacket with sash, she had pounded on Nabiki’s door until the middle Tendo daughter opened up, intent on finding out if she had seen or heard Ranma. Ukyou had been startled and worried by Nabiki’s appearance. The ever-resourceful extortionist was dressed in rumpled dirty clothing and had black raccoon rings under her eyes from lack of sleep. Although her conversation with Nabiki was short, considering that the obviously distraught girl had answered primarily in monosyllables, Ukyou had seen into the normally orderly room Nabiki had been sealed up in for days. It had looked like very messy hobos had held a convention in the small room for a month. Sincerely troubled by this new development, Ukyou had gone out into Nerima in search of Ranma.

So it was that when Ukyou began searching out all of Ranma’s usual haunts, the Tendo Dojo roof, the Nekohanten, a variety of culvert tunnels, she was a little surprised to find him somewhere he normally loathed to go. Ukyou could not hold back a small smile as she silently leaped from the trees onto the roof of Furinkan High. Ranma just kept on surprising her. Without a word she walked over to the edge of the roof and sat down next to her huddled fiancée, who had been staring out into the middle distance.

Ranma started violently when she sat down next to him, but he said nothing. Instead he sighed and stared down at his hands. Ukyou said nothing, but merely watched him, waiting for him to speak. In the end, he did. "Go ahead." He whispered. Ukyou blinked. This was not what she had expected to hear. "What?"

Ranma went on, still looking at his hands, which lay limply in his lap. "Go ahead. Yell at me. Hit me. Push me off the roof if you want. God knows I deserve it." Ukyou stared at him. "What the hell are you babbling about?" Ranma finally looked up at her. "I deserve it." He whispered, "I…I forced myself on you." Ukyou could not believe her ears. She stared blankly at him. Ranma took this as some sort of sign to go on. As he spoke he fiddled with his hands nervously. "I…I shouldn’t have forced myself on you in the dojo. And I’m sorry. You…deserve better than that." He looked back up at her for her reaction.

To his surprise, Ukyou burst out laughing, braying out long, loud laughs into his face. "You moron!" She gasped between howls of mirth. "You actually thought…Oh, I should throw you off the roof! I can’t believe how dense you are sometimes!" Ranma stared at her
