Hiei - See These Eyes...
Hiei spent the next few hours jumping from tree to building to tree and back again, neither knowing nor caring where he was going. All he knew was that it was away from Kurama.
::Stupid fox, stupid ningen emotions. Why is he allowing himself to be ruled by them?:: Hiei paused in a treetop, gazing out at the full moon above him. ::And why do I even care?:: That was a question he didn't really want to answer. He ground his teeth together. It was a question that had to be answered.
Hiei jumped from the tree, this time heading back the way he came, making a swift stop on the way at Kuwabara's house on the way. The large ningen had something Hiei needed.
When he arrived at Kurama's house, Hiei found his friend in bed sleeping. The fire demon quietly opened the window and entered his bedroom, standing next to the slumbering youko. Shaking his head, Hiei leaned down and gently ran his index finger over Kurama's cheek.
"Baka kitsune," he whispered. "Did you really believe that I needed to hear some stupid ningen song to realize how you felt? Or is that the only way to reach you?" The fire demon reached into his pocket, feeling the smooth case of the CD he'd "borrowed" from Kuwabara. If it was music Kurama wanted, he'd get some of his own.
The hand in the pocket clenched, anger welling up inside him. "You don't need me, Kurama. Stay away." And with that, he turned to leave.
A hand shot out and grasped Hiei's in a powerful grip, jerking the fire demon back. Surprised for the second time that night, Hiei turned to see Kurama sitting up in bed, his sharp green eyes wide open and filled with determination.
"Hiei," he said evenly, "we need to talk. Now."
"There's nothing to say," Hiei retorted, his words sharp but his heart troubled. "Do what's best for both of us and don't attempt to make us into more than we are."
"Hiei, don't you know what I feel fo____"
"I know what you feel for me," Hiei cut in, "although I doubt that works both ways." He pulled his hand back. "Kurama, I'm nothing but trouble. You should know that. My own people hated me. You should, too."
Kurama's eyes widened. "Is that what this is about?" he demanded.
"Find someone else to care for, Kurama," Hiei advised. "Like I said before, I don't need your help."
Kurama pushed the sheets back and stood up. "Then why did you come back here tonight?"
Hiei paused. "There's something I'd like you to hear, kitsune."
"Me?" Kurama was surprised to say the least. His eyes only grew wider when he saw Hiei pull a CD out of his jacket. "I didn't even know you knew what CD's where!"
Hiei glared at him. "I'm not as ignorant as you may think. I got this from Kuwabara." He walked over to the CD player and attempted to open it. "It has a song called 'Cat People' on it. He played it for Yukina once. I heard from outside... while I was watching her. The large idiot believed he would like it because of his fascination with felines."
Kurama tried not to laugh. "And did he?"
"No. It has nothing to do with cats." He glanced briefly over his shoulder. "But it reminded me of you... and me. Ahh, kuso! How does this baka ningen contraption work!?" he exploded, after several failed attempts to load the player.
Attempting to smother another grin, Kurama assisted him. "Here, like this. Now, just keep pressing this button until it gets to the song you want."
Hiei did so, and soon a haunting tune filled the room. Hiei gazed unblinking into Kurama's eyes, his expression unreadable. Kurama was confused at such a direct gaze, but then he understood.
'See these eyes so green
I can stare for a thousand years
Colder than the moon
Well it's been so long...
And I've been putting out fire
with gasoline.'
Kurama gasped, images of Hiei's exploding fire power filling his mind. It had kept growing and growing in strength, with black dragon being his climax. And the eyes...
"I could stare forever, Kurama," Hiei whispered.
'See these eyes so red
Red like jungle burning bright
Those who feel me near
Pull the blinds and change their
minds
It's been so long
Still this pulsing night
A plague I call a heartbeat
Just be still with me
Ya wouldn't believe what I've
been thru
You've been so long, well it's
been so long
I've been putting out the fire
with gasoline
Putting out the fire with gasoline.'
Hiei's ruby eyes blazed, and Kurama's mind filled with more flashes. Hiei being thrown off a cliff by a family who didn't want him, who never loved him. A heart that never even knew what love or friendship was. No, the fox didn't know what the small demon had gone thru. He couldn't even imagine so much hate. ::No wonder he's so cold...::
"No one has ever cared about me, so why should I care about them?" Hiei demanded sharply. "And why should you be the only exception?"
"But you've cared before," Kurama objected. "What about Yukina?"
Hiei stiffened. "Listen."
'See these tears so blue
And ageless heart that can never
mend.
These tears can never dry
A judgement made can never bend.'
Tears that never dry... a stone teardrop... a teardrop that helped him locate his only sister... forever separate from her, his only family... a judgement he'd made that he'd never revoke. Hiei closed his eyes tightly. "Yukina..."
'See these eyes so green
I can stare for a thousand years
Just be still with me
You wouldn't believe what I've
been thru
You've been so long
Well it's been so long
And I've been putting out fire
with gasoline
Putting out fire with gasoline.'
And still the fire kept growing... just like his pain.
"I can stop the gasoline, Hiei."
Hiei's head snapped up, his eyes sharp. "Nani?"
Kurama stepped closer as the music died down, emerald eyes locked on to ruby ones. "Maybe I don't know all of your past, and maybe I can't empathize with it, but we've gone thru so much together as friends just in the time that we've known each other. You may not admit it, but I believe that you've come to trust me over that time." He took another step closer and reached out a hand. "You said you could stare forever, Hiei. Let me stare, too."
Hiei didn't respond for a moment. He just gazed at Kurama's steady hand, his eyes occasionally flicking up to his friend's. Finally, he asked, "Why do you care so much?"
"Because," he replied softly, "I just do. Isn't that enough?"
Hiei's fangs clicked his bottom teeth.
There was another long moment of silence, but this time, the fire demon
reached out and
clasped Kurama's hand. "You
don't know what you're getting into, kitsune," he warned.
Kurama smiled and pulled him close. "Oh yes I do."
The End
