The
Hobbit
Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in comfort. But the wizard Gandalf
came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest facing
evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was
Bilbo---alone and unaided---who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an
entire countryside!
This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by
J.R.R. Tolkien in his best-selling epic, The Lord of the Rings.
The Lord of the Rings
Vol.I: The
Fellowship of the Ring
Vol.II: The Two Towers
Vol.III: The
Return of the King
Voted the Best Book of the Century by more then twenty-five thousand readers last year in
Great Britain, it's hard not to get totally immersed in this epic tale.
Vol.I: The Fellowship of
the Ring. The dark fearsome Ringwraiths were searching for a hobbit. Frodo
Baggins knew they were seeking him and the Ring he bore---the Ring of Power that would
enable the Dark Lord Sauron to destroy all that was good in Middle-earth. Now it was up to
Frodo and his faithful servant Sam, with a small band of companions, to carry the Ring to
the one place it could be destroyed---Mount Doom, in the very center of Sauron's dark
kingdom.
Thus begins J.R.R. Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings, considered by
millions of readers to be the greatest epic fantasy ever written.
Vol.II: The Two Towers.
The Fellowship was scattered. Some were bracing hopelessly for war against the
ancient evil of Sauron. Some were contending with the treachery of the wizard Saruman.
Only Frodo and Sam were left to take the accursed Ring of Power to be destroyed in
Mordor---the dark Kingdom where Sauron was supreme. Their guide was Gollum, deceitful and
lust-filled, slave to the corruption of the Ring.
Thus continues the magnificent, best-selling tale of adventure begun in The Fellowship
of the Ring, which reaches its soul-stirring climax in The Return of the King.
Vol.III: The Return
of the King. While the evil might of the Dark Lord Sauron swarmed out to
conquer all of Middle-earth, Frodo and Sam struggled deep into Mordor, seat of Sauron's
power. To defeat the dark Lord, the accursed Ring of Power had to be destroyed in the
fires of Mount Doom. But the way was impossibly hard, and Frodo was weakening. Weighed
down by the compulsion of the Ring, he began finally to despair.
The awesome conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, called by
millions of readers to be the greatest epic fantasy ever written.
The
Silmarillion
The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative
writing, a work that he could not publish in his lifetime because it grew with him. Its
origins stretch back to a time long before The Hobbit. But The Hobbit was
caught up in what Tolkien called "the branching acquisitive theme" begun in The
Silmarillion, and eventually The Lord of the Rings emerged from this as
well. The Silmarillion is the ancient drama to which characters in The Lord
of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them took part, such as Elrond
and Galadriel. The Silmarils were jewels created by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves
Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees
themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter the unsullied Light
of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils; but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his
crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The
Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his kindred against the
gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite
all their heroism, against the great Enemy. The Silmarillion also includes
"The Ainulindalë" a myth of creation, "The Valaquenta" in which the
nature and power of the gods is set forth, "The Akallabêth" a tale of the
downfall of the kingdom of Númenor, and finally "Of the Rings of Power" the
connecting link to The Lord of the Rings.
Unfinished

passion lay with the sea, and the great ships that sailed beyond sight of land. No man,
however, could serve two mistresses, and no mortal love could withstand the lure of the
sea.
The Third Age. the great warrior Isildur escaped with One Ring, cut from
the Dark Lord Sauron's hand---to hide it safely from Sauron's evil grasp. But Isildur
