Psalm for a Soggy Day
by Edward Hays
The sky has disappeared
And shapeless clouds hang low
Dripping water leaks into my life
As I listlessly begin this dull day
The electric blue of the sky is gone
As is the yellow song of the sun
Which spurs enthusiasm
Spreads smiles
And breaks depression's grip
Dear and faithful Friend
Who created both blue and grey,
Both sun and rain
Show me the gift of this dull day
Expand my spirit outward,
Before this sulky day
Drags me under like a tide
Into the basement of my soul,
Drowning me in gloom.
Help me turn the tide of depression
And lighten my heavy body
By the recollection of your love
May my smile be sunlight for others,
My zest the blue sky,
My hope like towering white thunderheads,
Swollen with the promise
Of your presence.
