Mulder and Scully, are they already an item? EMHamilton247@yahoo.com Mulder and Scully’s relationship is generally acknowledged to be full of sexual tension. However certain signs suggest different readings. Working partners, no matter how close don’t touch each other in the intimate way that Mulder and Scully have began to. It’s often frowned upon for FBI agents to get close to agents with whom they work with. But Scully has already broken this, (she had a relationship with her instructor, Jack Willis, while in the academy for 2 years) Mulder and Scully know, that there are people in the bureau who want the X-files closed down unquestionably. Knowing this, it’s possible that Mulder and Scully could have started an affair! Only they are very discreet, and while we always see them working, they would not let their personal relationship be seen. In “Tooms” the car scene, (where Scully and Mulder take it in turn to keep watch on a derelict building) this scene where Scully gives Mulder some food shows that they are finally acknowledging that they are attracted to each other. (She has got him his favourite filling sandwich and he says something along the lines of “if this is root beer, this could be love!” But it turns out to be some other soft drink.) At the beginning of the second series after the X-files are closed down Mulder and Scully hold hands as he tells her; “I still have you.” They could of dated till Scully’s abduction, we see their relationship develop, and when Scully is missing Mulder’s reaction is not that of a close friend but of a lover. When Scully wakes up in the hospital Mulder is extremely happy to see her awake. In “Wetwired” (t.v controls people, it controls Scully and not Mulder, cause he’s red/green color blind) Mulder sees that it is not Scully’s corpse, and you can see his reaction is that of a man who is relieved. In “Firewalker“ Mulder risks his life to warn Scully, when he gets to her he touches her neck. This is not the only time Mulder risks his own life for Scully. In “Die Hand die Verletzt”(A dark religion that sacrifices teenagers) Mulder put himself between the gun in the shower and Scully. (More than friendship.) Also in “Dod Kalm” (a ship where aging occurs quickly) Neither of them will drink the last of the water. (Stubborn) In “Irresistible”(Dead people are found with hair and nails removed) When Mulder finds Scully he holds her as she cries and kisses her hair. Mulder is able to comfort Scully when she is in need of it. When Scully’s sister Melissa is killed, mistakenly for looking like Scully, in “Paper Clip” Mulder is able to embrace Scully and comfort her. And for Scully to find comfort in Mulder there must be more to their relationship? In series 3, Mulder and Scully’s relationship advances to what looks like the real thing. In the “War of the Coprophages” (the one with the cock roaches) Mulder and Scully send most the time on the phone, Mulder’s attraction to Bambi gets to Scully, she comes to stop anything happening. Mulder reacts the same when he walks in, on Scully and Brother Andrew about to make out in “Gender bender”. He tells Scully “I know what I saw you were about to do the wild thing with some stranger.” (Do I hear a hint of Envy?) In “2Shy” (a man meets women on the Internet and kills them for their fat) Mulder puts his arm around Scully for no apparent reason except that he wants to. They even have fights like lovers do. In a “Revelations” (A serial killer murders 11 fake stigmatic’s, They have to save a real stigmatic.) Mulder complains about Scully never running him a bath for him. (They must have a close relationship for him to complain about this.) One episode where they act as if they care a lot about each, to a point where they end up arguing “Syzygy” (the horny beast) Mulder’s in the middle of a lover’s tiff with Scully. She’s upset (jealous) about him caring more about the x-files then them. And to find detective White is on top of Mulder, kissing does not help. She feels that Mulder is acting as a ‘macho man.’ However they are stop fighting with each other, but for each other. In “Grotesque”(a man kills people and then covers then in clay and makes art out of them) Scully has a go at Patterson for pushing Mulder to far, (she really does care about him.) They finally realize that they truly respect each other, in “Piper Maru.” (An Alien takes a human person deep under the sea, it takes his form back to land to cause problems.) When Mulder hears Scully instant knowledge of aircraft’s he say to her “ I just got very turned on” (Would you say this to a work colleague?) The closest episode we have seen yet where we actually think something could happen is “Pusher.” (A man with a brain tumor can control other’s including Mulder.) When Mulder puts his gun in Scully’s hand, with their hands together, Scully questions what he doing and they show their real concern for each other. Scully tells Mulder that “we’re stronger than this, we can get up and leave, she sheds a tear when Mulder is about to shoot her. They hold hands and play with each other’s fingers at the end. Mulder and Scully have spent the night together on many occasions but we never see them do anything, the first time is in the Pilot episode. A good time is in “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space.” Scully wakes to find Mulder in with her in her room, but has no memory of the night before! A time where they speak of their attraction openly is when their marooned on a rock, in “Quagmire” and Mulder asks Scully if she’s lost weight and this prompts Mulder to ask “Scully are you coming on to me?” When Faraday comes by and asks if he’s interrupting anything Scully shows guilt. Scully begins to understand Mulder a lot more now and realizes that he does care about them and the truth of Aliens and conspiracies. The fourth season: It’s Scully’s turn to comfort Mulder in his time of need. His mother has had a stroke and might have died. She holds him at his mum’s bedside. However the next one, is “Home” (a family that inbreeds.) Scully is very shaken by the sight of the deformed baby and Mulder touches her back gently, and asks if her family have any genetic disorders she says no. He then tells her to “find yourself a man with a spotless genetic make-up and a high tolerance for being second guessed, and start pumping out the little Uber-Scullies.” (Who ever does he mean???) She asks if his family has any history of genetic disorders. He says no.( but they give each other a funny look before he answered) Scully tells Mulder that if she could do her life over again she would change nothing that happened since she met Mulder except the worm man. In “the field where I died.” In “Terma” Scully is held in contempt of court as she won’t answer a question asking where Mulder is. She spends the night behind bars. The next day when asked again where Mulder is, she does not answer but is surprised to hear Mulder ask why his whereabouts where so important (they have not seen each other for a while). They indulge in a public hug and Mulder tells her how good it feels to put his arms around her!!!! When Scully finds out that she has cancer she doesn’t call her mum, she calls Mulder. He goes to find a way to help her and She writes a journal for him telling him that she’s pleased he carrying on with his life. Mulder sees this and he tells Scully that he’ll always be there for her. They hug. In “Small Potatoes” we see Scully and Mulder get mistaken for a married couple who had fertility treatment. Also we see Scully get close to a fake Mulder. He comes to see her, with a bottle of wine, she asks what wrong, and he says they never really talk. She tells him about high school and her prom date disaster. The fake Mulder asks if she is far off from her dream when she was younger, and if she could change her life, would she? she asks him if he would do it differently he says yes. He moves closer to Scully, She realizes that he’s going to kiss her. (She gets ready to kiss him) just as they are about to kiss the real Mulder crashes into her apartment. She realizes and gets away from the fake Mulder. (Is this what you get to do with your FBI partner???) How does Scully know what the fake Mulder is about to do, unless she has been in that situation with Mulder before? Okay the wine could have affected them both, and she might not be doing her usual thing, but even so, she had some say in whether she wanted Mulder to kiss her. By the next episode Mulder and Scully are having problems of trust. This is in “Elegy” Scully is not truthful to Mulder about a vision she saw, Mulder says that if you see the visions of the people who are dead around the time they die then you’re on the verge of death. Scully goes to see her psychiatrist, and tells her that Mulder’s passion and strength help her to deal with her illness and she draws from him!!!!!(What exactly does she draw from him?) That’s why she is still working. When she tells Mulder, about the vision, he asks why she didn’t tell him earlier and he tells her that he knows, what she’s afraid and that, he’s afraid of the same thing (the fact that Scully might die.) Scully says that the doctor told her everything was fine. Mulder says I hope that’s the truth. Scully looks at Mulder and leaves for home. In the last episode of the fourth series, (Gethsemane) we see that Scully is called by the police to identify Mulder’s body. By the end of this part 1 of 3, we see Scully begin to cry as she realizes that her Partner of four years is dead, a close friend and man that she has worked very closely with. She also tells us that she too is soon to die, her cancer is doubling daily, and this was one reason why she was unable to go to Canada with him, on his last assignment. Is this the behaviour of two people who work together, and are friends? Is this a way in which two friends of the last 4 years acts towards each other? I do not think so. They would not get jealous when they see each other with people. They would not care as much about what the other thinks. They would not be so intimate with each other, like they have been. They must either have very good denial tactics or so engrossed with their work that they are able to forget the attraction for each other. If this is true this could explain a few things, Scully wanting to kiss Mulder, Mulder reacting to Scully as a lover not a friend. Maybe they’re keeping their relationship a private thing. So that if they broke up they could still work together due to the respect and admiration they have for each other. Or they can’t let both their feeling consist together so pretend while at work to be just close friends. Smoking Man and Skinner both have eyes on the pair so, if they’re seen more intimate then allowed they could lose everything important to them. The X-Files.
