09/13/00: For pete's sake..
.I hear it more than I should. Whole websites lifted and reused under other people's URLs. Come on, folks. If you love the way someone's laid out something, write to them and tell them. They'll be flattered you noticed. If you REALLY want to use something from their site, ASK.

It's bad manners - tacky and thoughtless - to just steal things from other people's pages. In some cases, it might even be against the law.

Don't do it.

  1/25/99: A new thought.
Finally saw the Pioneer dub of FY. I've been told that the subs were unremarkable, especially compared to the amazing labor-of-love that Tomodachi did fansubbing - so I was eager to hear the dubs - weeeell..maybe it was more like a mix of eagerness and dread-saturated-going to the dentist-variety anticipation.

Well, we watched it over the weekend. Miaka is..incessantly squeaky.. as though any strength the character might have had was replaced in favor of a cartoon hamster eating cotton-candy. Hotohori was well cast, refined and smooth - although he sounds like a sane version of Tatewaki Kuno. Nuriko, I was pleased to hear, was appropriately catty and snarky. (It's been a looong time since I've last seen the early episodes, and I forgot just how gloriously bitchy Nuriko was in his courtier days...you GO girlfriend! #_~) Yui, IMHO, is profoundly miscast, just as squeaky as Miaka.

Tamahome..sadly.. was..for the most part...er.. unremarkable. That was probably the biggest letdown of the dub, after his beautiful japanese voice.

At the rate these things come out, it's probably gonna be quite a while before we get to hear just what they do to Hikitsu-sama and Tomite-kun.. but.. <hangs head in shame> I'll be at suncoast lookin' for the dub.. I just gotta know... #_^;;;;;

The old Urumiya and Hatsui Rant
[update 1/25/99: Saw OVA 2...GORGEOUS...but I feel like that old woman in the Wendy's commercials in the 80's searching for the beef. Only.. replace Beef with Plot..#_^]

In the mish-mash that calls itself Fushigi Yuugi OVA 1, we get to meet, in typically low-genbu-
seishi-screentime tradition (#_~) Hatsui and possibly Urumiya. (Visit Genbu's Cave for screen shots from this scene).

Does anyone else think that the character designer took the easy way out and made them just chibi-versions of Hikitsu (ok, sans eyepatch) and Tomite?

When my good friend and FY pusher, Carolyn, brought the OVA over to watch, we were both squealing like the drooling fangirls we are over "Chibi-Hikitsu! Chibi-Tomite!"

Then the realization set in. Hatsui? Nani?? o.0

Clothes, hairstyles, colorings. Makes me a little suspicous.

Anyone else?
