The new races entered the world and learned to build cities, and to farm food. Some learned to fight using muscle and steel. Many accepted this lifestyle. They were shown by the gods how to live, and believe there was no other way. Others questioned these ways. They set off to find their own answers. Traveling away from the cities, they came across great Dragons, and powerful and magical Shades. They watched these wondrous creatures as they performed great magic and supernatural feats. Some of these Dragons and Shades were less hostile than others, and some were quite friendly. The wandering travelers lived with the more friendly of the creatures and tried to learn their ways and to learn the secrets of their powerful magic.
Years had passed, and very little progress was made. They could not produce the spectacular magic of the magical creatures. Only when the Tower of Divinity appeared did true magic become used by mortals. Unfortunately the keepers of the Tower did not wish to share the powers that they learned of, and hired the Knights to protect the tower from intruders, but even the Knights could not keep the Shades out.
With the help of some Shades, the Tome of Magi Lore was obtained, and the Order of Mages was established. With the help of the Dragons, the contents of the books were quickly translated, and the Mages practiced their magic in secrecy.
