Tom Waits is one of the most astounding artists of our time. A mainstream unknown but with a huge following world wide. Defying all conventions, not only of music, but a musicians role in the public eye. Waits remains something of an enigma. |
An enigma he may be. A soulful, witty, bluesy, and dark enigma he is. A career spanning 20 years has seen him start out lamenting the dark corners of late night America: the bars, the pool halls, the late night diners - a theme that often returns in Waits songs.
More recently, Waits began to experiment with sounds trying to find the most odd sounds possible and intergrating them into his music. Trying to define or categorise his music would go against the musics integrity.
Below you'll find some links to video files (Quicktime) of an interview with Tom Waits in the back of a limo after a San Francisco concert. Unfortunately, the whole thing looks totally rigged. Happily, Tom doesn't want to play the game. The interviewer asks dull questions (trying to be really 'bizarre') and Tom retorts brilliant, cutting answers.
