Race: Shinma (which means "god and demon"); vampire

Family: none; original clan was that of the Western Shinma

Appearance:
     Hair: Short, light blue
     Eyes: Ruby Red
     Others: often seen wearing a strange mask 
                 strange markings on face and hands, and incredibly long nails

Abilities: "threading" (creating sliverlike strings out of thin air, either to bind or attack an opponent)
              "writing words on air", (words burn in mid-air, initial step in returning Shinma back to the Dark)
              a strong psychic bond between him and Miyu
              immortal, some vampiric qualities, though usual wards against vampires don't work on him

Companion: Miyu

Personality: He usually prefers remaining silent and letting Miyu do all the talking, although he will step in from time to time. He's extremely wise, and is always on the look out for Miyu, forever concerned about her welfare. He refrains as much as possible from being seen by humans.

In the OAVs: He doesn't talk; he hides his features behind a mask all the time and obediently follows Miyu without complaint.

In the Manga and TV Episodes: Talks a lot more. He's able to remove his mask, and seeme more human than he does in the OAVs.

History: (Spoilers....be warned!)

          Larva is a Western Shinma, and first traveled to Japan with his best friend Lemures to test his strength and abilities against Japanese Shinma. His original mission was to seek Miyu out and kill her, as Miyu is the last guardian of their rival Shinma clan. However, Miyu was still a child with no idea of her vampire heritage, and instead of killing her outright, Larva took secret watch and care over her through the years, despite Lemures' misgivings. Finally, when Miyu was thirteen years old, he tried to kill her. But as he was about to take her blood, Miyu discovered her powers, and was able to psychically overpower him and take his blood instead. This bonded him to her forever. In the OAVs, his punishment was to forever conceal his face with a mask and never speak, but in the manga and TV series, the mask was more of a symbol that he wears.

         Lemures tries to free Larva from under Miyu's spell and tries to kill her, but was killed instead - ironically by Larva. His bond with Miyu helped him understand Miyu's eternal sorrow, and he becomes her only friend because he wishes to, and not because of the bond they share. He helps her hunt other wayward Shinma who prey on humans and return them to eternal slumber in the Dark, a place where these demons are supposed to dwell.

Shin Vampire Miyu manga:
        In time though, the Western Shinma arrive in Japan for three reasons; revenge, power, and to take back Larva from Miyu. Among them is Cait Sith, a Shinma with hidden motives; Lemunia, Lemures' younger brother; Pazusu, Larva's teacher and mentor; and Carlua, Larva's cousin who's also in love with him. They succeeded in "killing" Larva, and performed a "Surgery of Darkness" operation to break Larva's bond with Miyu, as well as make him forget all about her, Carlua supplying the blood needed. When Miyu tries to fight the Western Shinma again, she despairs when Larva turns his back on her, eventually fights poorly and is killed. As she dies, Larva tastes some of her blood and is confused, because it tasted familiar....

         The other Japanese Shinma band together; Ranka and Aoi battle the remaining Western Shinma, while Yui, Nagi and Ichiro tries to revive Miyu using Yui's blood. (Miyu and Yui have a similar ancestry.) In one battle, Aoi succeeds in defeating a Western Shinma, while Ranka traps Larva in Miyu's realm and taunts him, adding to his confusion and sense that something about him is wrong. Yui manages to bring Miyu back to life using her own blood, and renewed, Miyu continues the fight, stronger than before. Because a Western Shinma named Cait Sith betrayed his clan to revive his mother, most of the latter had turned against him. Larva finally remembers who he really is and aids Miyu in defeating Cait Sith, killing his own mentor, Pazusu. Carlua tries to recapture him in battle, fails and tries to kill herself, though stopped by Lemunia. Larva then allows Miyu to take his blood again to reestablish the bond between them, while the remaining Western Shinma returned to Europe without Larva.
