October's game was October 8th, at the ST's house. Man, oh, man. There were some major boring parts for lots of people, but they may have been the lucky ones (well, their characters, at least). We had more PC deaths this time, and several NPCs deaths. Lots of activity, to the point that we held over game (at the players' insistance) for about a half hour or so. Oh, the humanity. And the blood. And the faith. And the willpower. November's game will be November 19th, due to so much non-game activity busying up the weekends between October's game and November's originally scheduled date of the 12th. And, yes, we still have the same problem we will continue to have until Crucible's story is done, though; trying to have something for everyone to do at our monthly gathering. WIth the main storyline being the major hunter/vampire all-or-nothing battle, it is nearly impossible to come up with any ideas for everyone to be involved with (at least for any major portion of the night). The way it's going right now, we can get about, maybe a fourth of the players involved at one time, but then the rest are just sitting around, waiting. That sucks. Also, we are having a huge problem keeping communication with some of the most active players (who are part of the main keeping-things-going part of the game). We also feel so bad for all of the new additions to Crucible who are missing out on the great part of Crucible; the personal storylines and in-depth personal touches. Due to the end-game storyline, there's just no time, rhyme or reason for a lot of that stuff. And, yes, that sucks. Many apologies from the ST and the Narrators for this. We have yet figured out how to avoid this part, and there are only a couple of short months left before the end. Remember, with the holidays and such coming up (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's) and people having so many non-game activities (family, etc.), these last few (five or fewer) months (November, December, January, February and maybe March) are going to provide sparse and hectic gaming opportunities, so please bear with us and try to get involved as much as you can. There are still a few new Players Guides available! They have no folders, so you must provide your own (or a binder, or whatever!). There are some changes and some fixes (like all those typos that nobody told me about!). Everyone should get a brand new one. Just a quick rundown of the tentative Crucible game dates for 2005: November 19th, December 10th. And for 2006 (if we're still going): January 14, February 11th, March 11th, and April 8th or 15th (definitely the latest possible date for the last game, no matter what!). More than likely, Crucible will be done by February or March of 2006, with April (the 8th Anniversary) being the giant Crucible "Exposition Party", where all cards are on the table, all secrets get told, etc., etc., and hopefully we'll see a bunch of faces that haven't played in a long, long time (like Emil, Eli, Patrick, Loni (if she's in the country and the state! LOL), Scott (ditto), Ken, Kurt, Deb, Kat, Linda, Dian, Johanna, Mitch, etc., etc.). Also, remember the Dark Nation (formerly: Ashes) game (it's mentioned on the links page, and has a write-up on the Player's News Page). I believe it's usually on the fourth Saturday of every month, more or less (like Crucible is supposed to be on the second Saturday of every month, but sometimes things have to change, due to real life). And for those who are looking for a LARP that's not Vampires, check out Ari's "Perchance To Dream" game (also on the links page), which is a fresh, new Changeling (faerie) LARP. Most of the Personal Pages have been updated up to August's X.P. Expenditures, but I could be wrong. All of the Personal Pages have all of the X.P. on them, but maybe not all of the expenditures. All of the Personal Pages have been updated with X.P., etc. up to August's X.P. If yours is not, drop us a line and let us know that you're actually interested in spending your X.P. Nominations up through August, 2005 have been updated (for real, this time!). Remember: even if you don't have time to get together a Journal, PLEASE turn in Nominations. Stand up and be counted! Give your fellow players the slap on the back they deserve (or give yourself the slap on the back you deserve). And I know, with this group, that if you cannot think of anyone for at least one of the categories, you weren't paying attention at all! Nominations are due within ten days of the game, but try to get them in sooner; the sooner you get them in, the sooner we can count them and get XP out! Don't be thrown off by that title; these are just your basic guidelines that have been passed along by word of mouth, but never really put down in writing anywhere for players or visitors to refer to. We have a few rules for the players and guests of the players, as far as attitude, behavior, etc. 2. When having in-character arguments, fights, etc., try to keep them indoors and out of sight of the public eye, since they do not all know that we are just playing a game. 3. Prop weapons are for indoor, private show. When going outdoors or into a public place to play, leave your props behind. Again, the general public (and the armed police officers) do not know that we are just playing a game and that these are just toy weapons. 4. Try to stay in character for the entire session whenever possible. If you need to go out of character for personal reasons, this is totally understandable, but try to leave the main gaming area as well, so as to not distract other players. If you are out of character because your character is gone (or in torpor, etc.), please leave the main gaming area. Again, this is so that you will not distract your fellow players and/or tempt them to fall out of character (unfortunately, no matter how well behaved you are or how good you are at staying out of the way and not interacting with people who are still in character, your presence will always lead someone to fall out of character). 5. Flirting is fun, but be aware of the bounderies of others. Not everyone will be able to voice these boundaries effectively, so it is best to go out of character (I know, I just said not to do that), and ask them what is okay and what is not. Also, although the temptation is there quite often, try not to break character just to flirt or flirt when you know your character really wouldn't (the Storyteller is trying really hard to adhere to this one, as it is one of his major bad habits). 6. Cheating. I must say, with this group, I can honestly say that this is a non-issue, for the most part. We have one of the best groups of players I have ever gamed with (and I have been gaming since 1977!). 7. I'm sure there's more. Like I said, we have a great group of gamers here, so not much needs to be said, but if you can think of something that should be here for guests of Crucible to know ahead of time, or for visitors to the Crucible web pages to know, drop me a line and I'll try to get it on here. |

~FIVE Years and Going Strong (4-12-03)~
Well, the April, 2003 game was the five year mark for the Crucible Chronicle. After an exciting and emotional game at Ken's house (it was a memorial for Luis, T-Bone and many of the other fallen Kindred over the years), we all gathered at the Clackamas Town Center Denny's for an "Awards Dinner", where we gave out awards for such things as "Best Characterization of a Player Character", "Favorite NPC", "Most Humorous Moment", etc. One of the best of the best, Heather, gave out compilation CDs with the awards (which she burned, printed covers for and put into cases all on her own... thank you, Heather!). The players surprised the Storyteller and Narrators by giving them a giant "Congratulations!" card and some gift certificates (movies, mall). We ate and talked and laughed and discussed how much longer this should go on. No real concensus was reached. Hahaha! This month also marked the final game for Beth, Michael's Narrator since the begining of this Chronicle. She may be coming back after several months as a player and until then may appear once in a while to play NPCs for us. Again, I have to get all mushy and sentimental here and say that this accomplishment would not have been even remotely possible if not for the wonderful group of players in this Chronicle. I do take some credit in the begining, core group, as they were hand-picked by me. I was looking for certain talented, dedicated roleplayers who would form the base for the rest of the players to build from. Then came the parts that I can take no credit for whatsoever; the throngs who were recruited by our players to come and join, and then the throngs that they recruited, and so on, and so on. And thus, Crucible took on a life of its own. Thank you so much, Crucible-ites! |

http://members.aol.com/djinovich/private/ztyph/menlar/sff/ftdata/info.html There were only two contestants: Tom and Jeff. Only Tom was able to complete most of the hunt by the deadline and so he was the winner. His prize was a glass chess set with glass board and something else, I think. Tom, did you get something besides the glass chess set? I think there was a book on Egyptian hieroglyphs, but he already had it. |

~The second Crucible Secret Scavanger Hunt is over Another Scavenger Hunt has come and gone. This time the winner (and only participant) was Ken> Yay, Ken! He shall recieve his prize very shortly. Details for that Hunt can be found at: http://members.aol.com/djinovich/private/ztyph/menlar/sff/ftdata/fish2b.html |
| (2003)Note: There has been a significant change in the way the Advanced level of Fortitude, Aegis, works. There will be a copy of the new write-up in your file at the next game, but for now go to the Disciplines section and check out Fortitude. |

Yes, that's right. There are several new contests that I'd love for people to jump into. Now these first few could all be considered just parts of one big contest; I'm not sure how I'm going to do it, for sure, yet. These are all for the writers out there (sorry, being one myself, I'm a bit prejudiced and tend to show favoritism to good writers, as some of you know from my comments about your Journals or background stories). 1. Fan Fiction. Yep, let it hit Crucible. Write a short story, encounter, scene, etc. involving one (or more) of the Crucible NPCs. Must be at least 2000 words, but not much longer than, say... 5000 words. These can be about current NPCs, past NPCs, dead NPCs, etc. 2. (this one's easy; you don't have to be any sort of great writer) In 50 words or less, tell a person who has played Vampire LARPs, but has never heard of Crucible, about the Crucible Chronicle. 3. Write your own version of the Personas Page, looking 20 years into the future. 4. Essay: What I would do, if I were Prince. From your character's point of view. At least 3,000 words, but no more than 8,000 words. 5. More to be added some time soon. The deadline for these contests? Who knows? Until I hear that anyone is actually interested and is working on it, I'm not going to worry about a deadline. You know, I'm not even sure if anyone ever checks this page out. If you read this, drop the Storyteller an e-mail and let them know, okay? |

Sigh... Another contest bites the dust, without even one entry, this time. And, this time, it completely surprises me. We have so very many writers and creative folk out there, I was actually afraid I'd be flooded and overwhelmed. LOL Such was not the case. I know I can put a lot of the blame on me for not making more people aware, but that is sort of part of these little contests; those who look, find them. On that note, here's what the prizes were for this last contest: 1. Fan Fiction: each winner would have had their story printed on the Crucible website, recieved a gift (it's still secret), and their character would have recieved the next level of all three of their in-clan Disciplines for free (no X.P., and if they couldn't get any more in-clan Disciplines, then they would have recieved something else) 2. 50 Words or Less: again, each winner would have had their entry printed up on the Crucible website, and their character would have gotten five free Abilities. 3. Personas Page: again, printed on the website, one free Discipline (in or out of clan), two free Abilities and one free Influence. 4. Essay: printed on the website, one free Influence, two free Traits of Merits and a cool leather journal. But, those prizes are now gone... Unless... anyone interested in trying their hand before the gavel hits for the third time? Going... Going... Gone! And we have some winners. Okay, so the prizes may not be the same ones quoted above, but there was so much coaxing needed to get contestants... You may soon view the winners at: http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/darkearth/583/rumors_news/winners.html |

I mention this not because Crucible is going away, but because I know there are many of you who would like to: 1. Play more than once a month. 2. Try a different Chronicle, to see what else is out there. 3. Become gaming whores (or bigger gaming whores).LOL Ashes also plays in Portland, wherever they can find space (much like Crucible) and currently has about ten or so players and two or three STs, so you should be able to get in there and get a lot done. Also, since it just started in March of 2004, the stories, characters and private jokes are fairly new. Now, be forewarned, however, this is an XP-heavy game, so those characters that started in March of 2004 are probably really powerful by now; don't let it's newness fool ya. LOL! Ashes uses Third Edition (Revised) rules and allows a few of the non-standard clans as PCs, so anyone should be able to find a way to truly enjoy themselves (had a few people in the past pass Crucible by due to only being allowed to play the seven basic clans). There are house rules, like in any good game, so make sure to contact the Head ST before making a character and putting too much work into it (a safe rule for any LARP). Anyway, the Ashes schedule for 2005 is (these are all Saturdays): Sept. 24, 2005 Oct. 22, 2005 Nov. 19, 2005 Dec. 17, 2005 So, drop Marilyn (the Head ST) a line at: ashesportland.darknation@gmail.com And let her know you're interested. |
I found this great 24/7 coffee place called the Fireside Coffee Lodge. It is located on SE Powell and 13th Place (i.e. just down from the ST's house). It's cozy and quiet and has FREE internet access (dial up, dsl and wireless!), with three computers hooked up for costumers at all times, or bring your own! There's a fake fireplace, two couches with a coffee table between them, lots of other seating and even a side room built for two, for more private meetings (truly perfect for an in-character private little conversation), with two rocking chairs and a tiny table for your coffee. They also have a shelfload of boardgames and such for customers to play with. They have coffee, bagels, some sandwiches and just an all around comfy atmosphere. The night crew is especially cool. Anyway, just thought I'd pass it on. Their web site is at: http://firesidecoffeelodge.com/ |
