Holydiver review
Such an classic album this is ! The first album of Ronnie James
Dio's solo career, and what a debut it was.
The line-up, whit former Sabbath drummer Vinnie Appice, and former Rainbow bass
player Jimmy Bain, and
the man who gave us the "Dio sound" - Vivian Cambell on guitars.
This lineup proved to be one of the best ones ever, and their first album ended
up an aöbum, with single material only !
I believe that any of the songs could easily do it as a single, maybe except
for Shame on the night.
Also, all songs are suitable to be played live, and I think I have heard every
one of them live, but I'm not quite sure.
Maybe I haven't heard Caught in the middle, but I don't quite remember.
Holydiver
It might be easier to find someone who have heard Holydiver,
then someone who have heard Dio.
What I mean is, that many people have heard the song, without knowing it was
Dio performing.
What would a live gig with Dio be without Holydiver ? It would still be great,
but you'd sense that fact that something is missing.
Something that should be there, just isn't.
Well, thank Dio (God) he never leaves it out. For many, "not-100%-a-Dio-fan"
fans, this song is important.
I have heard of quite a lot of people, who came to a Dio consert, just because
they had heard this very song.
And after the show, I guess they all went to by some more Dio.
Holydiver has one great riff, which just blows my mind away every time I hear
it.
Holydiver IS Dio !
Gypsy/Invisible
This one, straight from hell, has a more gentle riff, but oh,
it is good.
I have always enjoyed the studio riff and solo, but give this one to craig Goldy,
and you are in fucking heaven !
That dude was made to play Gypsy, and Gypsy was made for him !
The same goes for Invisible actually. They both have been good songs to listen
to, but Craig has just taken them both to a higher level, closer to heaven then
you can ever get.
I think these songs are quite similar, with the only difference that Invisible
has stronger lyrics.
Don't talk to Strangers
It has almost the same status, and is, just as Holydiver, badly
wanted here in Sweden.
At almost every Dio show I've been to, the crowd is screaming at it's loudest
during the intro of Don't talk...
Then, there is that silence, everybody is waiting for the electric guitar to
play riff off, and suddenly, OOOOHHHHH !
As this song has a special place in many hearts, it has one in mine aswell.
Straight through the heart
The best riff, the best melody, the best chorus ! This one of
two favorite Dio classic era songs (Vivian era), together with Breathless. There
is no way you can make me scream louder then putting this on.
Here it comes again STRAIGHT THROUGH YOUR HEART ! And the guitars, and, ooohhhh
soooo goood !
This song is heavy ! It's like a truck loaded with nitro, exploding !
Also, one of few Dio classic era (once again, Vivian era) songs that Tracy G
rocks !!!
This song suits hem so good, and he has done the best performance of it, ever.
Just listen to Inferno for instance, and you should get my point.
Rainbow in the Dark
The most classic keyboard sound there is, probably the best too.The whole song
is outstanding.
I've heard stories about playing this in the car really loud, and understand
the purpose !
Ronnie doesn't like it, but hell, the fans LOVE it, right ?
I say "thank you Ronnie!". He plays something he doesn't even like,
live, why ?
For us, his fans ! That is truly great of him.
And he always sings it with such power, and devotion. Once again, thank you
Ronnie !
