This site is the home base for an online
role-playing game called 'Arcadia'.
If you don't know what role-playing
games are, perhaps you should visit this
site if you are interested. In short, they are a form of group
storytelling, often guided by a series of rules. There are many
types of role-playing games. Some deal with fantasy epics (like
J.R.R. Tolkein's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, or sci-fi like
Star Trek.
This paritcular role-playing game that
we play in 'Arcadia' focuses on the superhero genre from comic
books and graphic novels. Here we enact our own exploits of costumed
do-gooders fighting crime for the greater good.
We don't do this face-to-face (in person),
but we do this through email in what has popularly become known
as a 'play-by-email' game (PBeM for short). The growing popularity
of PBeM games stems from the fact you don't need to gather a
group of 3-10 people in one place at any one time. Often, you
can game with folks who live clear across the world!
Another satisfying reason to engage
in a PBeM is that it becomes a more literary experience, where
your sole means of communication comes through the written word.
Needless to say, none of us are budding Shakespeares, but it
is enjoyable to ply our amateur talents through the written word.
