How Death Works
In our version of Faerun, death is a very complex process. In this world, once someone dies, an angel of the Goddess Death collects that person's soul. In most cases, this goes like clockwork and the deceased is transported to whatever plane of existence they are meant to go to. However, some veteran adventurers become so powerful, that they can actually defeat the Death Angel in combat and return to their bodies once more. The Goddess Death then allows that person to live out their life once more. Sort of a second chance. However, as a reminder to Death Angels everywhere not to attempt to collect this person's soul or mess with them in any way, the adventurer comes back to life with one glowing eye. Once that powerful person dies again, Death's right hand man known only as "Death's Head" must personally collect the deceased's soul. Now let's say our adventurer with the glowing eye is so darned powerful, he or she actually defeats Death's Head in combat and is returned to his or her body once more. This time the adventurer returns with two glowing eyes. This is a warning for everyone but the Goddess Death herself to stay away from this person. So naturally, once this insanely powerful person dies for a third time, the Goddess must collect the person's soul herself. And if even the Goddess is defeated, it is declared throughout all known planes of existence that death can no longer touch this person. Therefore the person is no longer mortal and henceforth becomes a deity and is granted all sorts of godlike powers by the other Gods. Once every 1500 years, deities from all surrounding planes gather for a secret competition where the winner is granted the right to become an actual God.
