Zerg Strategies

Defense (Non-rush)

As with any race, the most crucial thing to do at the begining is to get at least 8 drones gathering minerals. Continue producing drones, with the 9th drone morph to a Spawning Pool. Use an entire population of Larva to make overlords so that you can continue w/o halting. After 12 drones begin making Zerglings. Morph a Hydralisk Den next. While some will tell you to send drones to Scout, Zerglings make a better choice. They are faster, can attack if need be, & can also be used to attack the workers of an enemy quickly. Drones are too important to the Zerg, as they are the basis of all buildings. During this time, continue producing drones & Zerglings for defense, and start making Hydralisks as soon as the Den is finished. Position Zerglings near entrances & Morph Drones into at least 4 Sunken Colonies. Research burrowing ASAP & leave a Zerg burrowed at every potential new base you find, & at the entrance to every enemy, so that you know when they are coming. Morph an Extractor & send 4 new drones to gather gas. Morph an Evolution Chamber and Spire & upgrade Hatchery to Lair if not done already. Burrow Zerglings & Hydralisks in front of Sunken Colonies, so that when the attack begins, they can rise and attack from behind, thus trapping the enemy in a box. Now begin Morphing some more Sunken Colonies as well as at least 4 Spore Colonies. Start making Mutalisks now & keep them positioned for defense until ready to attack. Continue upgrading during this process & Morph a Queens Nest. Send at least 4 Mutaliks, 3 Hydralisk & 6 Zerglings with a Drone to your next Base location and Morph your new Hatchery. While that is happening, make at least 3 new drones & send to the new base to morph to Sunken Colonies. Make drones as quickly as possible at the new base. When the Queens Nest is done, make at least 4 Queens & research the Parasite. The Parasite is one of the most effective things a Zerg can do. Do not infect Goliaths, use Parasites on Transports, Tanks, & other units not used for direct attacks at the begining. Use the Queen for Ensnare(slows down the enemy) & Spawn Broodlings (instantly kills the unit & changes it into small Broodlings that instantly attack the next closest enemy.) Do not use Spawn Broodlings randomly at the enemy base, use it for defense & when attacking. When the Hive is done upgrade the Spire to Greater Spire & build at least 8 Hydralisk & 8 Mutalisk. Over half of the upgrades should be done now. When the Greater Spire is done Change 1/3 of your Mutalisks into Guardians. Continue producing Mutalisk & Hydralisk, & if you have enough resources, make some Ultralisks. All of these units should be used as defense until you are ready to attack. Remember to put some Guardians & Mutalisks out on "Patrol" in front of your bases. Use Patrol & they will attack anything that comes within their sight. Remember to keep some Hydralisk & Mutalisk with the Guardians for Air defense.

Attacking Strategies (Non-rush)
|
|
The first law of attacking is-destroy the enemies workers. No workers no Nuthin. Zerg are the frastest Race in creating ground units. In attacking with the Zerg, you must take into account the fact that you can manufacture them quickly, but they are the weakest of all units in StarCraft. Your best bet is to create a large number, and attack in waves. Never attack in numbers less than 12 Zerglings, or 8 Zerglings and 4 Hydralisks at the begining. Once you develop air units, create an equal balance of Mutalisks and Guardians. Never have Guardians apart from Mutalisks or Hydralisks to protect them from air attacks. Ultralisks and Defilers are good to have if you have multiple enemies. Ultralisks are good for Seige Tanks, and Defilers can effectively weaken an entire regiment with Dark Swarm and Plague.
Here's a good tip, When you have a Mutalisk that is near death, hit the Morph to Guardian box, and it will morph to a fully healthy Guardian, thus giving you two for the price of one. Thanks to CrotchOJustice{SQ} for that tip.

Rush Strategies

|
Build 6 or 7 Drones to gather minerals. Build a Spawning Pool ASAP, then build 2-3 Overlords. Once the Spawning Pool is started, build more drones. Immediately after the Spawning Pool is done Make Zerglings & send the first batch scouting. If you are facing only 1 enemy, just build Zerglings and when you have at least 10, go for the initial attack. If you are facing multiple enemies, build a Hydralisk Den and make Hydralisks and Zerglings to attack together. You have an advantage over every other race, take advantage of it, attack the workers of your enemies in waves, never mind the soldiers-the more workers you kill, the slower they progress, and the less units they produce. Continue producing Zerglings and Hydralisks to attack in waves. Take advantage of your ability to attack first. Cripple their production by killing workers.
