Apocalypse was going to funnel the powers of Magneto, Polaris, Iceman, Storm, Sunfire, Cyclops, Phoenix, Cable, Bishop, Mikhail Rasputin, and Xavier into The Living Monolith, then from the Monolith into X-Man. As the power flowed into X-Man, Apocalypse would possess X-Man's body (since his own physical body was getting old and worn out), thus achieving godhood. MAgneto had been weakened in some previous battles, however, and so he could not supply enough energy to "complete the circuit," thus shorting it out. The Twelve broke out, and confronted Apocalypse as he was preparing to transfer his essence into X-Man. Cyclops jumped in the way of the transfer though, saving X-Man... but Apocalypse merged with Cyclops, giving birth to a whole new horror.
But that's another story.
