Equipment: Both as "Phoenix" and as "The Protector," Ed wore different suits. Each was the creation of an alien race (his Pheonix suit was mostly Deiei Atomic Transistors blended with some of his space suit, and the Zardonians provided him with his equipment and costume as The Protector.) and he was quite adept at using both.

The Phoenix suit could

fire Energy Blasts of Unearthly (100) strength with a range of ten areas

Fly at Unearthly speeds

Absorb and Redirect Energy at Shift-X (150) levels

Detect Radiation and Life Energy with Amazing (50) range and sensitivity

create Force Fields ("Electron Fields") of Shift-X (150) strength. He was very creative with these, stretching a force field over the surface of a river so hordes of people could escape a disaster or creating a tunnel through a body of water - then collapsing the tunnel when the Deiei pursue him.

The Protector suit imparted much more "restrained" (but still quite powerful) abilities to the wearer.

The suits wings allowed him to fly with Excellent (20) speed, but he could boost that to Amazing (50) through the use of his wrist mounted "Miniture Atomic Thrusters."

His belt was actualy a "Plutonium Energizer" that raised his Strength to Incredible (40) for short periods of time. He had to grasp the belt with both hands, then his Strength was increased for ten minutes.

His wrist mounted "Molecular Dissipater" could Disintegrate non-living material with Monsterous (75) ability and 6 area range.

Limitations: The Phoenix was being hunted by the Deiei and and never seemed to get a moments rest. The Deiei had the deserting habit of failing to kill Ed, but succeeding to kill everyone around him.As the Earth representative of the Protectors, he was always being monitored. As Zor-Ol told him "...the moment you show hatred, bigotry, greed or any of the other human plagues -- mankind is DOOMED!". This means exactly what it sounds like. If they find Tyler unworthy of his position...the Zardonians may well destroy the earth! To put it lightly, they are flawed messiahs at best.

Talents: Military, Pilot Air and Space Vehicles.
Contacts: NASA, The Magus (leader of the "Protectors"), Leslie Tyler (his wife)

History: In the futuristic setting of 1977 (which was pretty futuristic in 1975 ;>) Ed Tyler was one of three astronauts who were about to begin a record-breaking five month stay abord the orbiting science lab "Threshold 1" when the liquid oxygen tanks in sector C exploded. He and the other two astronauts fled to the escape ship, but only Ed survived the crashlanding in the Arctic Sea...and even then he'd have died soon if the watching Deiei hadn't decided to rescue him. But while they had saved him, they had little love for his species. As the Deiei put it...

Deiei : "In the beginning God created this planet and all things else in the universe. But our race evolved quickly...in another start system...and we visited your prehistoric planet! Yours was a world of mammals...untamed! So it was with high expectations we experimented upon your ancestors...mutated those who clung to the branches of trees. Changing them from ape...to man! And we have been here ever since watching you grow...make mistakes...and make war on one another!"

Ed Tyler : "Our Guardian Angels, huh? Then why have you never revealed yourselves? Are you ashamed of your handiwork?"

Deiei : "Very much so! Which is why we must destroy your people and start all over again!"

Ed Tyler : "WHAT?"

Anyway, Ed steals some Deiei technology and uses it to destroy the subterranean outpost (after the Deiei all but destroy the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik) by redirecting the bombardment of Nuclear Particles back at them. The Deiei try to kill him several times (killing lots of people around him, but always missing him) as he tried to defend the Human race from it's angry creators...

Then the writer (Jeff Roven) was pulled from the book and issue #4 was written by Gary Freidrich (who was hired to take the series in a new direction.) and suddenly Ed has decided to commit suicide to escape the Deiei.

Phoenix : "What's left for me? I've been handed more raw power than man has ever imagined......but I've misused it at every possible turn! Now there's nothing left to fight for! No matter how many of the aliens I kill -- thousands more appear to take their place! No power on Earth can stop them!"

After creating a tombstone of the planet...

Phoenix : "Now there's nothing left but to blast off and tell it all good-bye! To head skyward so fast that I burn myself up in the atmosphere!"

But he's rescued by yet another bunch of aliens (the "Zardonians" - who look like very bland Asgardians with the big Jack Kirby robes and armor.) who are the REAL power behind the Deiei. The Zardonians have dismissed the Deiei and rescued Ed so he can be tested to see if he's worthy of being a Protector.

Oh, and the Magus can't seem to say anything without screaming and jabbing his finger at Ed ;>)

Magus (while jabbing finger) : "SILENCE, Earthman -- we shall ask the questions!"

Magus (while jabbing finger) : "Now may be such a time -- and the cause is the maddening planet you call EARTH!"

Magus (while jabbing finger) : "You have raped your planet of it's resources for self-gain -- and killed for sport!"

Eventually, the Magus stops yelling at Ed long enough to tell him he wants him to become the "Protector"...but first he must beat-up a Cyclops on the Asteroid of Exiles!

Afterwards, Ed returns to Earth...determined to live up to his new title...as "The Protector"!!!

Description: As the Phoenix, Ed Tyler wore a skintight costume that was a mix of his old space suit and the Deiei Atomic Transistors he'd stolen when he broke out of their hidden city. It was a mix of red and light blue "racing stripes" with white gloves, shoes and a white diamond on the chest. He wore no mask. As the Protector his costume was dark blue and red, with a yellow belt, wings and eagle head chest device. Red boots and a red mask finished his costume. Out of costume, Ed was a tall, handsome fellow with light brown hair...except later, when the Zardonians "transformed" him to change his features and made him bald.

Personality: Ed is a perfectly normal individual who has been place in one bizarre situation after another and is just trying to cope. He knows that the Protectors are always watching him, and he tries to give them the best impression of the human race as he possibly can.
