The Soldiers of Misfortune are the field agents of Undertow, a radical right-wing subversive organization. Undertow uses the Soldiers to strike out against opponent or target that they do not feel is in accordance with their view of how the world should be. Thus far, targets that Undertow has deployed the Soldiers against include such diverse operations as a humanitarian aid effort for refugees in Africa and a drug-processing facility operated by South American drug cartels.

Undertow has a unique method of selecting members for the Soldiers of Misfortune: they located and identify individuals who are activists, trying in some way to change the world for the better, then kidnap, brainwash, and genetically augment them. It is unknown why Undertow and its mysterious leader Protocol prefer to select their operatives in this manner.

The Soldiers of Misfortune operate in two-man attack units. From the security of Undertow's submarine headquarters, an expert strategist panel literally controls the brainwashed Soldiers' every move on the battlefield. Thus far, no more than four of these units have ever been deployed against a single objective, although that may be because there are no more than four units. The genetic augmentation the Soldiers undergo leaves them unstable and in need of frequent "genetic reinforcement." Also, the augmentation causes an increased need for nutrients: the Soldiers require far more food than normal. Presumably, these side effects are not present in those Soldiers who were metahumans prior to their involvement in the program, such as Hard and Fast.

Using the Soldiers in Your Campaign: Although Kymaera was freed from the Soldiers by her New Warrior teammates Night Thrasher and Rage, the other seven Soldiers of Misfortune are presumably still serving the shadowy goals of Undertow and Protocol. If the Soldiers are encountered, it is also possible that a new Hard has replaced Kymaera on the team. Or perhaps one of the heroes would make an excellent addition to the team?

Hard and Fast

Hard

Hard was the codename given to Namorita Prentiss, aka Kymaera of the New Warriors, during the period of time she was a brainwashed agent of Undertow. Her abilities and powers in this identity are exactly as those presented in the Fantastic Four Roster Book (available from TSR!), with the exception of her Intellect and Willpower traits, which would be reduced accordingly.

Fast

Fast is the codename given to the former member of Air Force known as Sparrow who was kidnapped and incorporated into the Soldiers during a mission in Africa. Despite attempts to rescue her (as well as Kymaera) by members of the New Warriors and her teammate Cardinal, she presumably remains an agent of Undertow to this day. Her powers and abilities remain the same as those listed in her Air Force entry as Sparrow.
