As a child, Charlie Ronalds saw his parents gunned down by a mutant assailant. When he was an
adolescent in an orphanage, his only friend Guido Carosella was hit by a bus and violently manifested his
mutant abilities. Charlie attacked Guido, who lashed out in pain and struck Charlie. Charlie suffered
a limp for the rest of his life.
When Charlie learned that Guido was a member of the government
mutant task force X-Factor, he struck a bargain with the demon Cloot to grant him enough power to destory
the mutants. As Charon, Charlie reanimated three souls whose hearts were full of hatred for X-Factor, the
Chalkers. The battle was short and swift, and left the Chalkers returned to the land of the dead and
Charon taken by Cloot for some "education."
