Everybody knows about psychic detectives. Lots of tv shows have them. Police departments sometimes call on psychics to help with a case. Most Americans today probably believe that there is something to all this psychic stuff.
So, let's go with that. Only instead of being all wooie gooie, and softheaded, let's do it logically. Assume that there is something to all this psychic stuff. Assume that some people can feel or sense the thoughts or emotions of other people.
Well, if it works, then it has rules that govern it. Otherwise, it doesn't work.
Problem 1: The principle of similarity
One of the basic psychic rules is similarity. Like thoughts are in contact, unlike ones are not.
So, let's say that a psychic is checking you out to discover if you are EVIL or not. Well, he is going to be open to your 'evil' thoughts. By the same token, he is not really going to be open to your 'good' thoughts. So, you can give a million dollars to the African College fund that morning, and he won't notice that, you can spend lunch discussing relief programs for africans starving to death in Nigeria, and he won't notice that, but when a black taxi driver accidentally splashes as he drives past in the afternoon, you will look up, see a black person, and be angry.
Your psychic will notice that, because that is what he is looking for. He will know, because his 'powers' have told him so, that you are a neonazi racist from hell. Because that is all he will ever see of you. His subconscious assumptions will prevent him from seeing the rest.
Because of the principle of similarity. Psychic powers do not give an unbiased review of all the evidence. No person in the world has lived entirely without anger, or temptation. Even Christ was tempted in the desert, even Christ was angry at a fig tree. No person in the world can be fairly tried on the basis of psychic powers alone.
So, due to the principle of similarity. Psychics investigating a person telepathically will always find evidence of guilt. Regardless of how innocent the person actually is.
Problem 2:The Observer Effects the Observed
This is a principle of physics. The observer has an effect on the observed. It is not good procedure to steal a principle from one science, physics, and apply it to another science parapsychology. Nonetheless, in this case, a similar principle applies.
Let me illustrate with an example from the notebooks of Aleister Crowley. Crowley a man noted for sexual orgies, sex magick, and great physical appetites was looking forward to a conversation with one of the noted psychics of the day. Crowley, as a ceremonial magician was a sort of psychic transmitter. The man he was going to speak to was one of the most noted mediums of the day. A sort of psychic receiver.
Crowley was most dissappointed in the conversation. He noted in his journal that he had wanted to have a conversation about the subtler questions of psychic phenomena and all the man had done was talk about sex.
Consider the irony of it. Crowley who was doubtless transmitting enormous sexual energy, was dissappointed that a medium was unable to talk about anything but sex in his presence. It is a fair reflection both of Crowleys magical powers and of his lack of perspective and understanding of his effect on the world around him.
I consider it to be a valid evidence of psychic phenomena because a) it is what you would expect to happen when these two people met and b) it was clearly not faked because Crowley himself failed to understand what was happening.
What we learn from this is that a psychic can influence the thoughts and behaviors of another individual without even knowing he is doing so.
So, we have our psychic detective, his mind firmly fixed on the sort of evil thoughts he expects to find in the mind of his suspect. Suddenly, if the suspect is sensitive enough, he begins to think those thoughts.
Again, our psychic has found evidence of guilt where no guilt existed. Only this time he has created that evidence himself without realizing it.
Let us assume that the psychic was working with the police. So, he has knowledge of the crime scene that only the police and the perpetrator have. This knowledge shapes his expectations of the thoughts he is looking for. The suspect, being sensitive, receives these thoughts from the psychic and, suddenly thinks of something about the crime that only the police and the perpetrator could have known. He probably assumes that he has read it somewhere. Later he mentions it in conversation about the crime, cannot explain how he knew it, and is convicted of the crime, even though innocent.
If psychic powers are real, this is a real problem.
Problem 3: Gossip
In the bible it says, "When two or more of you are gathered in my name, I will be there." If the saving grace of Jesus is present when people gather in his 'name' or spirit, then what is present when two or more people gather together for the purpose of malicious gossip?
Medical studies have shown that prayer has a real power to heal. Regardless of whose name you do it in. When two or more people gather together and share a thought, idea, aim, or purpose, it appears that that thought exists in some way independent of them. If it is focused to heal, then, it can heal.
Gossip is not focused to heal. It is focused on evil and bad things. It specifices evil or bad things about a specific person. Thus, as prayers to heal have the power to do good, gossip has the power to create evil. It can place evil thoughts or inclinations in the mind of the person being gossiped about, it can even cause that person to do evil things.
It is possible that 70 or 80% of all the evil in the world is created by malicious gossip and negative expectations. Each time you engage in gossip, you are helping to create more evil in the world. You are using your soul, the spiritual power God gave you, to create evil.
Now, in this case our psychic detective is very open minded, has no subconscious bias about the guilt of the suspect, and is not inducing any guilt in the suspect himself. But, the newspapers have printed a story about the suspect. People are gossiping about him, suddenly out of the blue, he starts having guilty thoughts.
The psychic detective again finds evidence of guilt where no real guilt exists.
Problem 4:The Devil
We are assuming the existence of a spiritual world here. Let us assume that evil spirits actually exist. Their purpose being to get people to do evil things so they can harvest souls for hell.
There are several ways they can do this. 1)Tempt the person by putting evil thoughts in his or her head.
So, our psychic detective is testing his suspect. Unknown to him or the suspect, a demon or devil chooses to put evil thoughts into the persons head. The psychic detective finds these evil thoughts, and decides the suspect is evil.
Because of this, he blackballs the suspect. The suspect is unable to find work, or dissappointed in other areas.
The suspect despairs, embraces evil, since he can get no justice in the world and hell gains another soul.
In this case, the psychic detective has been an able and useful ally to the devil, creating the despair, feeling of injustice and hoplesness necessary for the demon to corrupt another soul.
Satan probably has fewer tools more useful to him than psychic detectives, and gossip.
Problem 5:The Devils Little Helpers
Again we are assuming the existence of a spiritual world. This usually includes an evil side. It also includes the assumption that some people on this planet are willingly helping the evil one.
Up until now, we have explained how innocent well intentioned people can fall into error and be tricked into persecuting the innocent by 'psychic evidence'.
Everything that we just described as happening by accident can also be done on purpose. The people doing it of course will never do evil themselves. Instead, they will use their psychic powers to get people they don't like to commit crimes, disgrace themselves, or their religion.
Televangelists, and catholic priests accused of child abuse are examples of this in our world today.
God, however, is not fooled. In the end, the evil one, and his servants will be cast out. However, many who you and I know to be guilty of evil acts will be forgiven, and some who we consider pillars of morality will be condemned. Be prepared to let God do the judging.
What Kind of World
What kind of a world does all this make. With psychics running around and judging people, largely on the basis of evidence of guilt that is false, the people most able to resist this judgement, are the insensitive, and the close minded. So, reliance on psychic evidence builds a world where the only people who have the appearance of virtue are the insensitive, the close minded, and Satans Little Helpers.
Sensitive, open minded people are automatically guilty. This is not a good world.
Policework Moral
The moral to this as far as policework is concerned is that while psychic evidence may sometimes be useful, it is highly questionable, and can never be considered as solid evidence of guilt. There is no substitute for solid facts, real evidence and good policework. In seeking justice there is no substitute for due process, the right to face ones accusers, and a fair trial.
Christian Moral
Good Christians say things like, 'If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all'. They do not gossip, if they find themselves thinking ill of others, they pray to be freed of such thoughts. They never delight in the condemnation of another, but rather regret it. Instead of seeking excuses to think they are better than others, they seek wisdom on how to live a good life and be good people. Look first at the plank in your own eye instead of the cast in your brothers. They are always prepared to forgive others, seeking forgiveness themselves. Thus, they avoid accidentally becoming the servants of the devil.
Psychic Moral
Psychics should practice detachment, struggle not to have strong
personal feelings about a persons guilt or innocence, and be aware of and
guard against all of the problems mentioned above. The focus should be
on finding physical evidence by clairvoyant or similar means, not on intuitions
about specific persons or persons character.
