Behavioral Genotypes

A behavioral genotype is a genotype which governs instinctive patterns of behavior. In an intelligent species, it has its major effects in areas like courtship, mating, and aggressive or challenge behavior. Though other patterns of behavior may show genetic components. See the paper Shopping v Cocaine Abuse for an example.

Just as skin color, hair color, and other physical characteristics can vary from group to group within a species, so can genetically determined behavioral attributes. Usually this variation is relatively minor, and is more a variation of threshold than type. I.E. the instinctive level at which courtship behavior goes from courting to mating, the instinctive level at which aggressive behavior goes from a status fight to a fight to the death, and other similar behavioral thresholds may vary to a greater or lesser extent.

In any population consisting of a mixture of behavioral genotypes, the majority behavioral genotype sets the norm for behavior within that population. The minority behavioral genotype has to adjust it's behavior accordingly. This is difficult to do. These norms being determined by instinct, are not discussed and do not conform to an easily perceived pattern. The problems involved in making this adjustment place the member of a minority behavioral genotype at greater risk for mental health problems than members of the majority behavioral genotype. Some of those risks and their causal relationship to instinctive differences in behavior and behavioral thresholds are discussed below.

Schizotypal Behavior

Schizotypal behavior consists, among other things, of a tendency to signal one thing and to do another. A member of a minority behavioral genotype grows up in a situation where the majority of people around him signal something that he perceives as a signal for friendship, or aggression, more or less serious than is meant by the majority genotype member. In other words, from his perception, he grows up in a situation where the majority of people around him signal one thing, and do another. The minority genotype member thus tends to learn this form of schizotypal behavior by imitating his perception of the behavior of the majority of people around him. Once learned, this behavior becomes a more or less well integrated part of his personality, and may be communicated to other members of his family who do not possess the minority genotype.

Another component of schizotypal behavior is to separate oneself from ones emotions and to act detached, and distant. This development follows the previous one in the attempt to adjust to the behavior of the majority genotype. Initially he imitated his perception of behavior. Later, learning that his perception was flawed, he stopped reacting spontaneously to signaled behavior. Knowing that his perception of what was being signalled did not work, and would not provide him a reliable guide to the feelings that were being signaled, he stifles his own emotional reactions until he has sufficient evidence to be sure of what is meant.

A third component of schizotypal behavior is the ability to seemingly forget who you are and become in your own mind someone else. The ability to do this is learned, as the minority genotype member attempts more and more desperately to understand what the majority genotypes around him are signalling. He spends a great deal of his time desperately attempting to put himself inside other persons minds to understand how and why they behave the way they do. This is not yet full blown multiple personality disorder, as he is fully aware of who he is, but has just cut loose his own mind to attempt to be other people so he can understand the situation he is in.

Schizotypal behavior is so clearly causally related to the existence of differences in instinctive behavior that it might best be considered as a flag indicating the presence of a minority behavioral genotype. However, other things, such as strong acculturation as a child in one culture and moving to another culture can produce many of the same symptoms.

Scapegoating

Scapegoating is a form of behavior where one individual in a group is singled out and blamed routinely for anything that goes wrong. It is not a healthy form of behavior. In fact it is symptomatic of inferior teamwork, and incompetence in military organizations. However, it is quite common. Most children learn or practice scapegoating at one time in their lives. The target of the scapegoating behavior is almost always the most poorly socialized member of the group. Because of the communications difficulties created by minor behavioral variations, this is frequently a member of a minority genotype. This behavior, once learned, is frequently applied at home as well as in society. Families with behavioral genotypes frequently have a reputation for being, well, eccentric or strange. In the attempt to achieve social acceptance, one or more members of the family are singled out as scapegoats, the one's who have something "wrong" with them. This member is then sacrificed to the majority genotype in various ways, so the rest of the family can achieve acceptance. He is the one who is eccentric, the rest are alright.

Scapegoating is common in all human social groups, but due to the pressures of being a member of a minority genotype, and the example set by the majority of scapegoating such persons. Minority genotypes are at increased risk of scapegoating behavior being learned and practiced to extremes.

Paranoia

The feeling that everyone is plotting against you, or trying to trick and fool you is almost unavoidable to a member of a minority genotype. Everyone around him seems to be signalling one thing and doing something else. Usually to make a fool of him. The feeling, can become a fairly sophisticated conscious belief that one is being plotted against if the real cause of the misunderstandings and communications problems is not clear. This is complicated by the fact, that due to scapegoating behavior, a minority genotype almost always does have at least one or two individuals plotting to make him look like a fool, or get him blamed for things he did not do.

Everybody discriminates against poorly socialized individuals. Or to put it another way, everybody discriminates against nerds.

Violence

Since the member of a minority genotype is liable to perceive a status or mortal combat challenge when none is meant, he is liable to responding violently when it is not called for. Members of the majority genotype cannot understand why he went off, and consider his behavior abnormal or insane. In turn they do not send the appropriate signals to calm him down, and react nervously around him, which in turn makes him nervous, and more likely to misrespond in the future. This can result in cycles of violence, for no reason as communications break down completely.

Members of minority genotypes are at greater risk for behavior problems involving patterns of violence than majority genotypes.

Top -)(- Behavioral Genotypes -)(- Schizotypal Behavior -)(- Scapegoating -)(- Paranoia Violence -)(- Stress -)(- Sexual Dysfunction -)(- Multiple Personality Disorder -)(- Summary Treatment and Counseling

Stress

Let us take a werewolf for an example. Under normal conditions he is the single dominant male in a small family unit. All challenges to violence for the adult male are challenges to a deathmatch. The instinct for status challenges is largely lacking, used while immature in practice fights with brothers, but weak or absent in the adult. The majority genotype routinely engages in such challenge behavior to determine relative status.

The result is that to the werewolf, it appears on an instinctive or emotional level that he lives in a society where virtually every other male is set upon challenging him to a fight to the death for no good reason. It is like living in a world filled with homicidal maniacs. This is not a stress free environment. The knowledge that if he tries to play the game and loses his temper he will be locked up somewhere as a maniac does not reduce the stress.

While this is an extreme example, members of minority genotypes are at increased risk for all mental health problems caused by stress.

Sexual Disfunction, incest and abuse

Incest is more common in families that are isolated or poorly socialized. Families of minority genotypes are generally poorly socialized. They are at greater risk for disfunction in this area than the majority genotype.

Multiple Personality Disorder

In families of minority behavioral genotypes, stress, scapegoating, mislearned behavioral communications skills, mislearned violence patterns, and sexual abuse can result in an environment as abusive as that the inmates of Nazi death camps endured. This may sound like an exaggeration. Unfortunately, it is not, especially, since the victims are generally children.

Under these pressures, Multiple Personality Disorder can develop as the child desperately tries to be someone else, do something differently, change themselves enough so that the abuse will stop.

Because of other contributing causes. Members of minority genotypes are at increased risk for multiple personality disorder.

Summary

In summary, members of minority behavioral genotypes are at a significantly greater risk of mental health problems than members of the majority genotype. This is not to say that there is anything inherently wrong with their behavior or capacity for thought, they are merely different. As seen above the problems usually result from communications difficulties which result in poor socialization and related problems.

One of the major mental health problems has its roots in the social stigma attached to having unusual behavior. This stigma, carried to extremes leads to the worst abuses and problems for persons caught in this trap. Feeling that there is something wrong with them, they try to hide it, blame it one someone else, abuse other people to make them suffer to, etc. If that feeling is removed, much of the potential for violent abuse and real mental illness can be alleviated.

Unfortunately, one of the major causes of that feeling is the traditional definition of mental illness. Being different means that you are mentally ill. Traditional Psychiatry does not recognize the existence of behavioral genotypes, and has no understanding of how such behavior difference contribute to the development of mental health problems. Because of this, traditional psychiatry is unable to treat these persons effectively, unable to provide effective counseling, unable to realistically explain what is happening to these individuals, and has in fact become a part of a pattern of genocide resulting in the slow extermination of these genotypes. For more information on that read the Werewolf Liberation Front paper.

Treatment and Counseling

Be realistic. Explain the origins of the problems. Encourage the member of the behavioral minority to simplify their behavior so it is easy to understand and relate to. Seeking a more structured environment where relationships are governed by written rules like the military can be useful. Accept the fact that some persons will dislike them and plot against them, due to scapegoating patterns. Encourage them to not return or imitate such behavior, but instead set an example of fairness and honesty, so members of the majority genotype can learn to trust them despite the communications difficulties.

Discourage the idea that there is something wrong with them. Instead encourage them to deal with the problems that their minority status creates without accepting the idea that they are inferior or worthless. Point out that their different instinctive viewpoint is of value to society, and someday, they or their children or grandchildren may be responsible for some significant development or insight that would not have been possible without that viewpoint.

Don't pretend that they will ever be just like everybody else. This is not possible. Do not pretend that they are superior to other people. Since they have to work twice as hard as most people to live a normal life, that work sometimes pays off in special insights, better education, etc. This is easily attributable to the work involved in overcoming the difficulties of their situation and instinctive differences in viewpoint rather than the idea that they are in any way inherently superior to normal people.

With appropriate counseling and treatment, members of behavioral minorities can be integrated healthily into society, and many of the mental health problems that their situation makes them liable to can be avoided or lessened.

Racist Potentials in Mental Health Concerns of Minority Behavioral Genotypes

The symptomology described in MHCMBG is clearly caused by communications difficulties inherent in minor differences in instinctive behavior. As mentioned in the article, psychological theory does not accept the existence of behavioral genotypes.

So, what will occur is that as a minority group, Native Americans, African Americans, etc become distributed throughout a majority population, Whites, some members of the minority group will encounter the problems described in MHCMBG. They will develop the symptomology described in MHCMBG. Statistical studies of mental health will reveal a higher incident of these symptoms among nonwhites.

Since the symptomology is misunderstood, these people will be mislabeled. Diagnosed as mentally ill instead of being recognized as minority behavioral genotypes. This will provide solid statistical evidence that 'mental illness' is more common among nonwhites than among whites.

This will appear to be solid, 'scientific' evidence that nonwhite races are inherently less mentally stable than white people. As you will have discovered in the previous two papers on this subject, there is no scientific or theoretical justification for the assumption that these symptoms indicate mental illness. That assumption is outdated, and contradictory to the major body of accepted scientific theory.

Nonetheless, given such apparent 'scientific' evidence, persons seeking a justification for stricter treatment of nonwhites will have one. Mental illness scares people. Scientific evidence that nonwhites are inherently more prone to 'mental illness' than whites will justify the most radical forms of discrimination and racism. After all, you have to protect yourselves from the 'loonies' don't you.

Persons considered mentally ill lose all their civil rights. They can be locked up, drugged, subjected to electrical shocks, operated on, all without their consent. It is a perfect excuse for the imprisonment and torture of nonwhites. More than that, anyone undergoing such treatment will start showing symptoms of extreme stress, harrassment, and will claim that they are being unjustly persecuted.

These are symptoms of paranoia. Even the sanest individual, after being subjected to 'treatment' for mental health problems can be diagnosed as 'mentally ill' by the standards of psychology. Once the idea that nonwhites are more prone to 'mental illness' than whites is accepted, it will become 'scientifically' justified to lock them up, and 'treat' them. Once subject to such 'treatment' even those not showing symptoms before will show them. This is a blank check. You can't go wrong with this if you are a racist. Any nonwhite arrested for possible 'mental illness' will eventually show symptoms justifying the arrest.

This is a bad thing. This is an extremely bad thing. This definition of mental illness needs to be changed. These symptoms need to be recognized as problems caused by being a member of a minority behavioral genotype, not inherent mental illness.

Werewolf Liberation Front

The Werewolf Liberation Front (WLF) pronounced Wolf of course is not really a joke. It is here to raise some serious issues about human rights and mental health. You see, there is a history of what is called mental illness in my family. I disagree with the diagnosis, and I disagree with the definition of mental health as being normal. I.E. thinking the same as everybody else. I disagree with the idea that being abnormal, I.E. not thinking like everybody else is automatically mental illness.

These issues may seem academic. Unfortunately, millions of people lead lives of quiet misery, suffer social ostracism, and refuse to have children because of these mistaken definitions. These mistaken definitions are, in real fact, a tool for the quiet genocide, the total extermination of a number of human genotypes for no reason except that they are different.

For some odd reason, I feel that it is important to call attention to this fact. The mental health professionals may be getting a little irritated at this point. Too bad, how would they feel if they were being exterminated. Some of you may be saying, well, there is a history of mental illness in his family, so he must be crazy to. Not really, if I am crazy, it is only because living among humans is enough to drive anyone insane. By the way, that's not a joke either. It, like the previous statement about genocide is nothing more than a literal scientific statement of the facts.

So, I seem to have something to say. Can I justify it logically and realistically. Yes I can, the arguments to justify it may seem boring. I am sorry for that. Science and logic depend on precise realistic definitions. A good scientific argument starts with the definition of terms, and the use of words within the limits of those definitions is necessary for the argument to be valid.

One of the major weaknesses of the socalled "soft" sciences like psychology is their lack of clear definitions. Quite literally, sanity is based on normality of mental outlook. If you think enough like other people, you are sane. If you don't think enough like other people you are crazy. This is not a precise, scientific definition. It has no logical validity. You cannot really put it to the test. Many people accepted as normal today would have been considered insane in Victorian England. Many Victorian customs strike us as pretty crazy. Can you see the trouble? There is no definition. Being different and nothing more is punishable by lifetime imprisonment, having thousands of volts of electricity pumped through your brain, social ostracism, and that terrible, deep sense of having something "wrong" with you. This treatment, and sense of shame, and desire to not have children suffer in their lives as I and other members of my family have suffered in our lives leads us to choose not to have children. Over the last three generations of my family, approximately 75% of us have made that choice. Whatever it is that makes us mentally different than other people is being eliminated from the human gene pool. This is genocide. As I said, this definition of mental illness is literally a tool for the quiet genocide, the total extermination of entire human genotypes.

You may ask, 'So what's wrong with that, they're crazy, the worlds better off without them'. That's what Hitler said about the jews, just substitute the word inferior for crazy. I do not think it is wise to argue that the extermination of human genotypes is justifiable under any circumstance. More, there is no compelling evidence that anyone in my family really is or ever was mentally ill or crazy. Different yes, crazy no.

Top -)(- Assumption of Mental Illness Violates Theory -)(- Why Werewolf -)(- Ulfhednar Holmgang -)(- Summary -)(- Loss in Species Viability

Assumption of Mental Illness violates Basic Theory

In fact, the idea that a hereditary mental difference is a form of insanity is really an unscientific attitude. Theoretically, such hereditary differences in behavior must represent different behavioral adaptations to the environment, just as differences in skin color and hair represent different physical adaptations to the environment. The assumption that inherited behavioral differences represent mental illness is contrary to accepted scientific theory about the origin of species. It would be more in keeping with such scientific theory to assume that such hereditary differences represent different adaptations and are no more unhealthy than the fact that some people have dark skins and other people have light skins. Until compelling evidence is produced that it is indeed some form of illness.

Some people at this point will say. Hey, wait a minnit. You can't inherit behavioral differences. Really, if you can't inherit behavioral differences, how can you have families with histories of mental illness. Secondly, if you can't inherit behavioral differences, why do cats behave differently than dogs. You can learn behavior, but any sane person has to admit that to some degree it is inherited. To suggest that it is completely learned and not to any degree inherited is rediculous. The more we learn about the physiology of the brain and the degree that thought is effected by brain chemistry the more obvious this becomes. No one would argue that you inherit the genes that make different chemical in the body, and no one would argue that these chemicals do not effect behavior. Yet some people still say that behavior is not to any degree inherited. How can people seriously believe that?

It is literally becoming impossible any longer to maintain the fiction that behavior cannot be inherited in one degree or another. The question is, to what degree is behavior inherited, not if it can be. The answer is probably different for different people. It is unlikely that in a species as farspread and varied as Homo Sapiens that everyone inherits exactly the same behavioral imperatives in exactly the same degree. Thus, not only are differences in behavior inherited, but, the degree to which behavior is inherited as opposed to being learned is probably different as well.

So behavior can be inherited. Such differences in inherited behavior are not mental illness. The genocide, the total extermination of such people is wrong.

Why Werewolf

OK, so maybe I do have a real issue here. So why call it the Werewolf Liberation Front. Isn't that kind of inviting ridicule? Well, yes I guess it is. But werewolves are a good example of a behavioral genotype. The origin of the myth of the werewolf can be traced to real people who existed in historical times, who displayed an inherited pattern of behavior that was different from that which most people exhibited, and who possessed a culture and laws that reflected and accepted this behavioral pattern as normal.

You will notice I said the myth of the werewolf. We are not talking about people who are bitten by wolves and become wolves themselves. We are not talking about shapeshifters, witches, druids or other paranormal matters. We are talking about a historically verifiable example of a behavioral genotype which became or contributed to the mythical figure we call a werewolf today.

Top -)(- Assumption of Mental Illness Violates Theory -)(- Why Werewolf -)(- Ulfhednar Holmgang -)(- Summary -)(- Loss in Species Viability

Ulfhednar

Ulfhednar is an old Norse term which means wolf coat, much as Bersark is an old Norse term which means bear shirt. These were words which were used to describe specific kinds of warriors among the Norse peoples. Ulfhednar wore wolf skins and were considered to turn into wolves in battle, bersarks wore bear skins and were considered to turn into bears in combat. Pretty obviously one of the origin points of the myths of werewolves and werebears. Reading the Eddas provides numerous instances of this sort of behavior being inherited by members of the same family. So, we have a historically documented incidence of a specific form of behavior being passed down through families. More, it occasionally skipped a generation, or one son would get it and others would not. Just like other inherited traits.

Top -)(- Assumption of Mental Illness Violates Theory -)(- Why Werewolf -)(- Ulfhednar Holmgang -)(- Summary -)(- Loss in Species Viability

Holmgang

Norse law used to include something called the holmgang. This translates as home war. A berserk upon reaching sexual maturity would leave his home and wander around until he found another family group where he would challenge the dominate male, and if successful, would slay the dominate male, and take over his home and family. This was legal and accepted behavior. A part of the norse traditional law.

This does not look like learned behavior. It looks like a form or inherited reproductive behavior, paraleling the reproductive behavior of many other species. More, you have to admit that reproductive behavior, even for humans, is to some degree genetically determined. So, in looking for an example of a behavioral genotype, one should look specifically for variations in reproductive behavior, as that is very likely to be in one degree or another genetically determined.

The aggressive behavior of the ulfhednar or bersark thus becomes a variation of an inherited reproductive behavioral pattern. The bersark rage of the ulfhednar and the bersark thus is no more than an extreme variety of normal male aggressive behavior. As such, the ulfhednar and families in which the bersarkargang is inherited make a good example of a behavioral genotype. Ulfhednar basically means werewolf, thus the werewolf liberation front.

I am not campaigning to get the holmgang reinstated. The idea of making it legal for adolescent males to wander the countryside killing adult males and taking their women does not appeal to me. It may have worked for a society where ulfhednar represented a significant percentage of the population and the behavior was governed by natural instincts and thus naturally limited. For normal humans it is nothing more than an excuse for murder and rape.

This is an important point. Such a law seems insane to people today. I mean, if he murdered one guy today, what would keep him from killing another one tomorrow. If it was just an excuse for rape and murder. The law doesn't work. His neighbors would not be able to trust him, and they would band together and kill him in self defense. On the other hand, if it was instinct, then as soon as the young male had his females and family group, he could be trusted by his neighbors. It would not occur to him to do it again, because he had no need to. The law only works if this was instinctively programmed behavior.

You can argue that behavior can be learned and imitated, and that people growing up in a society with such a law could learn the limits and obey them. This is true. The behavior could be learned and imitated, but it had to originate somewhere. In its origins, it had to be sufficiently governed by natural instinct to make it acceptable as a part of society. So, the law of the holmgang provides compelling evidence, by the fact of its existence that this was at one time a form of reproductive behavior governed by instinct, instinctively limited, and common enough that society recognized and accepted it as morally correct behavior. It unlikely that a human society would have had such an extreme law, so unusual unless there was a compelling instinctive understanding and acceptance of the behavior.

Top -)(- Assumption of Mental Illness Violates Theory -)(- Why Werewolf -)(- Ulfhednar Holmgang -)(- Summary -)(- Loss in Species Viability

Summary

In summary, evolutionary theory clearly supports the idea that inherited behavior differences are adaptive differences, not mental illness. The growing body of knowledge of genetics and the chemistry of behavior clearly support the idea that to some degree behavior can be inherited. Reproductive behavior being essential to the continued existence of the species is most likely to be governed by instinctive or inherited behavior. The ulfhednar represents a historically verifiable example of an extreme pattern of reproductive behavior that was almost certainly inherited in some instances. Though humans not possessing the instinct may have learned and imitated it in other cases.

When all these things are taken into account. I do not believe that a reasonable person can doubt the existence of behavioral genotypes, or fail to be disturbed by the fact that they are slowly being exterminated for no reason than the fact that they are different.

Top -)(- Assumption of Mental Illness Violates Theory -)(- Why Werewolf -)(- Ulfhednar Holmgang -)(- Summary -)(- Loss in Species Viability

Loss in Species Viability

Let us look for a moment at the cost of this genocide to the species as a whole. Consider a group of scientists looking at a problem. In one room you have a team made up of three 'normal' humans. All basically born fighters. In the next room you have a team made up of one 'normal' human, one ulfhednar and one born thief. That is to say, a born fighter, a born killer, and a born thief. The fighters instinctive behavior is to bull through a problem struggling for dominance, strength against strength. The killers instinctive behavior is to go for the throat, find a weak point in his adversary and rip him apart. The thiefs instinctive behavior is to observe his opponent, and quickly and stealthily get what he wants.

This provides three different instinctive methods of attacking the problem. Which team do you think will come up with an answer first. The team that has only one method of attacking the problem, or the team that has three. Say it was football instead of science. Which team is going to win more games. The team with three strategies or the team with only one? As you can see, the extermination of behavior genotypes is not just a terrible human tragedy. It represents a serious loss of viability and ability for species Homo Sapiens as a whole.

The purpose of this essay is to question the idea of mental illness as it is currently defined. Especially when the result of that definition is a process of genocide of what may very well be inherited behavioral patterns. It is to call attention to these questions, and hopefully to get mental health professionals and normal people to rethink these matters and change their approach to dealing with people who are different.
